http://cgi.ebay.com/Alembic-Bass-Guitar_W0QQitemZ270206040863QQihZ017QQcategoryZ4713QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Distillate 8-string Exploiter on Ebay. I'm pondering bidding on this but have no idea what the bass is actually worth. Yeah. I know. Worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Thing is it needs a new nut to convert it back to an 8-string. I'm not sure why the awful jackass replaced the original nut just to make it a 4 string... he could very easily have just not strung it up with the 4 octave strings and that would have worked fine. Some people's kids... So my point is that a new nut from the factory is in order. And that will obviously cost a bit. It also looks like the truss rod access cover is missing. Thoughts? |

I have been watching that one as well. We'll see where it ends up. Seller told me it was a 32" scale which I don't think ever made it into the listing. |

If the price is right it would be worth the hassle of a new nut and truss cover in my opinion. Theres something about these eight string exploiters that really appeal to my romantic imaginative side |

When you look at the bridge can you see the saddles for the octave strings? You can see the spacing in the tail piece, and yes, something odd happened to motivate the nut to be replaced. I am having a hard time seeing the details on the bridge and if it doesn't come with the original parts you are talking MORE investment in the instrument with the alembic replacements. |

I can't see in the pics, but the seller says they are there. I'll probably throw a sizable bid at this in the last seconds, at least significantly higher than what's there right now, though it won't be double... |

Oh well, someone outbid me by $100... I'll offer the same $2750 delivered if it's someone here and there's buyer's remorse though. I hope it ends up someplace happy, at least. |

The most likely reason behind the replacement nut was to space the strings more centered at the nut rather than shifted to the bottom edge of the neck as when the octave strings were strung up. He probably tried it as a 4 string without the nut change and the G string may have slipped off the edge of the fingerboard when playing. Too bad he didn't keep the original nut. I would put it back as an 8 string in a heartbeat. Kris |

Yep, clearly that's why the nut was replaced. I'm surprised the bridge wasn't replaced as well. The tailpiece wouldn't matter, but screwing down a four string bridge would have made it feel just a bit better. |
