Hi FS is my '83 Alembic Spoiler. Im the only owner. Bought it new. Zebra wood top and veneer headstock face, mahogany body, maple neck with ebony board, oval inlays, Spoiler electronics. Added hipshot d-tuner. I might have original, have to find it. Brass bridge and tailpiece. Adjustable nut height. Schaller tuners. OHSC Front pickup has a crack where it screws into the body. I tighened to hard about 22 years ago. LOL. Bass is in very good shape. Frets are pretty good. No major dings or accidents. Normal play ears Id say. Very pretty Zebra top. Nice sounding and playing Spoiler. I retired it about 8 years ago. Hasnt seen a gig in a long time. Time to move it along. $2200 OBO. No trades. Thanx | ||

I saw this on ebay yesterday with a starting bid of $1500, but I can't find the listing now. It always makes me chuckle when someone puts up an auction with a high starting bid and then says there is no reserve. It's very pretty and I hope you get what you're looking for, but maybe you should do a little research on the usual trading value of a "stock" Spoiler. | ||

Rob, you don't need a reserve when you start the bidding at street value. Start an auction for a $1500 bass at $1 or even $100 and point out there's no reserve. Start it at $1500 and saying no reserve is sort of redundant. It looks like a pretty piece of flatsawn zebrawood and someone may pay a premium price for it, but the only Spoilers selling over $2000 in the US market are Exploiter body shapes. If you're looking for a place to sell your Alembic at fair market value to someone who will appreciate it, you're in the right place. By the way, your ebay listing says that "The seller ended this listing early because the item is no longer available for sale." You may need to contact them to get your listing fees refunded if this was a mistake on their part. | ||

Hi Rob; First, welcome to our board. It would appear that your initial experience of our group might have been a little less welcoming than is customary. The atmosphere here is, on the whole, warm and congenial; and new members are very welcome. I hope Bob doesn't mind if I mention that he is one of our most knowledgeable and helpful members. Bob tends to keep up with used Alembic prices much better than I do, and I thus find his contributions on market prices to be quite helpful. Internet communication can be much more difficult than communicating in person. We lack facial expressions that convey in real time a lot of information. It is quite easy to quickly write and post something that can be worded in such a way that it will be read by others in ways that we perhaps did not intend. This problem can be compounded by the fact that many of us sit at our computers working on several things at the same time, with several different blogs and discussion groups open at once, typing away, posting as quickly as possible. It would appear to me that in this case Bob may have been a little less than careful in his wording, especially in light of the fact that he was responding to a new member who did not know him as well as many of the rest of us do. It does appear that in his second post, he was trying to be a little more helpful and a little more careful in his approach. There are a lot of messages posted in our little forum every day; and many of the regulars here try to read as many of them as possible. Thus we can sometimes tend to hurry through, and perhaps not take the time that we should when posting responses to messages. We do actually have posting guidelines, and they can be found here. I hope you will take a few seconds and read through the guidelines; it's fairly short. I think it reflects the spirit of our community here. Generally, the members here do tend to follow these guidelines. And I really do think that this is a great forum. The members here are a great group of people from all over the world. Second; we do not like to remove threads. I've received a number of requests in the past, and I've turned them all down. If we were to remove a thread, it would set a precedent that would cause further problems in the future; so we just don't think it's a good idea. So while I do understand why you might wish to have the thread removed, I do hope you will understand that, given the overall context of moderating the forum as a whole over time, I don't want to remove the thread. I also hope you will give consideration to the fact, though your initial experience of our group may have been less than positive, that you are welcome here; and I invite you to read some of the other threads posted here. I think you'll find it really is a great group. Thanks, David | ||

HI Thanx Dave. Pleasant response. I bought this bass new. I dont know the market so here I list in good faith with OBO. Someone starts spouting off telling how to run an ebay auction and the such. I have over 200 positive feedback there. I was insulted. Ive also been a Mod at another bass site. I did nothing wrong. I would, personally, never go into someones thread as a tire kicker and tell them that they "chuckle" at my auction or ad. Just another coward hiding behind their computer. I would bet much money that I would never get the same response across the table from me. I know all about the internet forum world, trust me. I was referred here hoping someone would get a nice old bass and I'd get the most to me of its value. To my surprise I got crap Rob | ||

Rob, Welcome to the Alembic Club! Sorry to see that your initial response was not the greatest. Folks.....fwiw Rob came here on my recommendation. I know Rob from Talkbass. I also suggested to him a price range of $1,800 - 2,200. I based that range on the fact that I have seen used Epics go for $1,200 - 1,500 since the last Alembic price increase. Given that, in my opinion, a reasonable rate for a Spoiler in the condition that his bass is in and with such a nice Zebrawood top & back, would be in the $1,800 - 2,200 range. And I have seen a couple Spoilers transact above $1,800. Rob, stick around, it'll get better. Peace, James | ||

I'll vouch for James' post, because I saw Rob's pricing inquiry on talkbass, and the advice James repeated here is exactly what he gave there. Also, I visited Rob's site some years ago and can verify he's had this Spoiler for a hell of a long time. Rob, don't get twisted up -- this forum is very different than TB and members here take all things Alembic very seriously and use this place as a venue to collect knowledge rather than 'ooh' and 'aah' about the latest cool bass somebody bought. Bob/bsee is a very knowledgable member of our forum, and if I might make a guess, I suppose he saw a new member trying to sell a bass for strong money and got defensive. Hopefully that's all done now. | ||

there's a guy on TB selling a Norlin era LesPaul for 2,500 beans. Maybe I should tell him he's dreaming. Someone may pay that for the guitar, but he's off the mark market wise. You can buy a historic LP for that kind of cash...but I'm not going to tell him his LP is one of the least desirable pauls out there. He thinks he has a gem. I've seen spoilers go for around a grand on the low side 1500 average, 2K would be top dollar IMO why not be gracious and accept the apologies made here? you don't seem to be into that tho, oh well. good luck with your sale! | ||

You don't have to keep responding to posts if you don't want to be on here, I'm pretty sure that eventually the account will become inactive. As for spoiler price, in my personal opinion, all the used alembics deserve a much higher price than what they go for on the used market because they are such works of art. I saw a spoiler on here go for about 2000 with signature electronics, so stock would be significantly less, at least on the board. 12-1600 i'd say | ||

Thank you Alembic for providing it! Most likely a moot point anyway since Rob has already deleted his account but I found it a bit awkward when Rob (bikeplate) was asked to accept apologies. James, That's pretty amazing. I saw the eBay auction run 7 days with a $1750 starting bid come to an end on Saturday with no bids placed, so I wonder that someone in the market and willing to pay $2K didn't grab it for less there. Do you know if it was sold to a US buyer? $2K would be a very fair price, if not a bargain, to a European buyer. | ||

Spoilers sell for approx €1100 here, a few weeks ago someone grabbed one for €600 in Holland  I saw an Elan (almost identical to mine) go for €994 on ebay.de a few months ago Imho Rob was extremely fortunate to sell for $2000... | ||
