First post! Anyways, about a year ago, I passed up the opportunity to own a beautiful, mint Orion 5 bass with a nice flame maple top for $800. DOH!!! Anyways, needless to say, I have been kicking myself in the rear ever since then. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to part with their Orion 5 for somewhere around that price? If so, email me some pics, and a description of the condition of the bass.

Cheers.

Yes, they are very nice, but I'm in the market for a 5er. I'm still kicking myself for passing up the previous one.

I suggest you don't kick too hard or at a constant tempo. Keep watch, sometimes great deals pop up.

I hate to ask, do you think you would ever offer your Orion for sale down the road in the future?

Jason,

Funny you should ask, and it's no bother, I actually tried to trade it for a MK Signature just last week. Then I thought to myself, "What are you thinking?" I can't say for sure, I love this bass, it was a great deal and more string than I wanted. Not sure what to do with the low B. I am sure that it would be the only way to help finance another Alembic, still hoping for a souped up Mark King, but anything is possible. I take it you've been to the "showcase" area, that's my "Orion 5". In the past, I've owned a Ric 4001 and a really great Jazz (despite what some people say, Jazzes are solid basses). And this one blows them away.

Sorry, longer answer than you deserved. If you like and when I get to that point I'll let you know.

peace,
Mike

Yes, please let me know if you decide to part ways with it. Your Orion looks just like the one I passed on, except for the groovy headstock, and the LED's. Of course, I wouldn't complain if they ended up in my hands.

I like Jazz basses (non-Fender) too, I just like the ones with the "dinky" style body. The normal ones just feel a little too chunky.

For the Orion I traded a Fender American Jazz Deluxe: active bass cut/boost, trebel cut/boost, mid eq, pan, master vol, noiseless pickups, slim neck and the smallest ash body you've ever held. It was a steal, used for $300(retail $1700). Got $800 as trade in value, hard to beat. Still miss it. I also have Fender's Geddy Lee Sig Jazz, it's a chunky piece of maple, high action and big bottom, don't play it much, has a personal autograph from the man himself on the upper horn. I do like Jazzes. My next Alembic will have the Jazz slim neck deminsions.
You like the peg head? I wasn't crazy about it, but it's kind of "old school" and it does look better than the standard Orion head, IMHO. It's also a big as a canoe paddle, LOL. The electronics on mine are not the standard Orion package, they were upgraded to the Europa set. I've been tempted by several Alembics, so I can sympathize, sometimes the time wasn't right to buy, but you do what you need to. That doesn't stop me from wishing....
take care,
Mike

Jason,

You need to change your user name to 'relentless'.

I've seen several, but for one reason or another it wasn't what I wanted. In the meantime, I'm researching specs and features, trying to get it on paper if I decide to have one built.

I imagine you've been earnestly looking, you can see what the asking prices are for 'mint' instruments. I check all the time to see what I could possibly hope to get for mine.

Hey Mike,

Sorry!! I hope that doesn't screw you up.
I was in there a few months back and they had it behind the glass. It's a consignment from one of their customers.
They're a very reputable store and really nice, even though they're not Alembic dealers, they're still pretty cool.
I was just reading this post and I was trying to remember where I saw a MK for sale...
It did look very clean.

Good Luck,

Dino,

No worries. There have been two as of late within "the club". One sold right away and took a chance on a traight trade for the other, obviously no deal was struck. ebay has had a few, but I'm not into coco bolo, is that a Bozo no-no?

I'm trying to keep a level head and not just get one because it's available. I have some particular features I want, hence the noodling on paper with Alembic's options. I don't think I'll find "why, that's just what I wanted!" in the for sale ads.

Thanks, for the link, still awaiting their response...

peace,
Mike

Sorry for being annoying, it just gets frustrating sometimes when you search the net looking for something that no one seems to have for sale (at least at a decent price). I'll stop bugging you so much, and hopefully someone will post to this thread looking to make a change so I can stop kicking myself once and for all.

Jason,

There have been some good deals on other Alembics, don't discount a good deal on an Epic or Excel. There are some elephantine memories within the club, this thread will float around. These guys seem to take care of each other.

I understand the 'want'. I'm perfectly happy with my bass. I keep telling myself that I don't 'need' anything else, but I sure as hell 'want' another one.

Secondly, you're not being a bother. Don't fret it - no pun intended, although that's a good one!

I like some of the Epics I've seen too, but I've heard some bad reviews on them...of course, none of them came from this board, and the people here seem to be a lot more informed and knowledgeable about Alembics compared to others.

I've read a ton of good, solid information at this site. As a crediblility issue, that means more to me than choice of instruments. That they happen to think highly of Alembic and it's products, that's the bonus.

good luck,

Hey Jason,

Just saw this on eBay. Not sure if you saw it or not. The price is a bit high for it but it looks very clean.

Hey Mike, did you ever hear back from East Coast!?!?

Dino,

Yes, I did. I talked to Joe (DeGregio?), very nice guy.
I don't know how funny this sounds, but if I were going to order a MK, this wouldn't be it. If I made the deal it would mean putting off getting what I want even further, I'd still be thirsty. Make sense?

Mike

ps: I think you missed on the ebay link for Jason.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but that looks like a couple of Q switches on that Orion 5; could be signature electronics, or just a fuzzy picture.

Oops!!!
Your right, I did forget to put the link in.

Yes it makes total sense!!!! Hold off and get EXACTLY what you want. If it means having to custom order, so be it!!!
There's nothing cooler than having a bass built to your specs too.

Good luck with your quest. If I run across any other MKs, do you want me to pass them on to you?

Have a great 4th!!!!

Dino,

Thanks, I appreciate your offer, but I think I should heed my own advice and start saving. I'd like one with 20th anniv electronics or customize the standard signature set. Ah, geez it's too easy to spend money on these things!!!!!!!!

BTW, I went to your website, very busy boy you are. I don't know why, but I'm sometimes surprised by the number of professional musicians in the club. My hat's off to you and the others that have been able to make a career out of music.

I've relatives in Andover, Lowell, Watertown, and 'at the shore' in Newburyport. Great part of the country.

take care,

Mike

Dino,

Do you often play in the North Shore area and what is your website, if I might inquire? I grew up in Rowley and Ipswich and although I am temporarily occupied in Florida I return often. I'd be psyched to check out an Alembic and its player in action next time I'm home.

Court,

Dino can be seen in all his glory at:

Ipswich? If I remember correctly, isn't that along 1A? Extremely beautiful. Drove through there last year. I was ready to pack in all in an' get out of Texas.

Hey Mike,

Thank you for the kind words. Yeah I've been pretty busy as of late. It's nice but as we all know, it's either feast or famine. I'm sure by Christmas it'll be pretty slow. Thank you for directing Court to my site too.
To Court,
Yeah I was playing in the North Shore quite a bit last year. This year is a bit slower because I've taken on more corporate/wedding gigs as opposed to club dates. Let me know when you're in town and I'll see if I'm out there at all for a gig.
Back to Mike,
Newburyport is one of my favorite places to hang on a Sunday, plus there's a great blues jam at a place called The Grog there. Ipswich is beautiful as well. WAAAAYYYY too expensive though for a musician's budget. HA
Hey, you guys have a great 4th!!!! I won't be anywhere near a computer for the entire weekend. I'll catch up with you all on Monday!!!

Peace,
Dino

Mike,

Thanks for the info. I'm going to go check out that website now. And yep Rte. 1A runs straight thru town.

Dino,

Thanks also for the reply. I will be up there for sure at the end of August for my cousins wedding, and maybe sooner if I get a chance. I will send her your website too, though I am pretty sure they have a band already lined up. Yeah Newburyport and the Grog great hangouts. My first girlfriend lived on Milk Street and we would check out Thursday night Reggae at the Grog often. Well that was about a 15 year nostalgia trip nipped in the bud.

Thanks again guys,
Have a great 4th!

Yes, I saw that Orion on eBay...way too pricey for me. I am still persuing my dream Orion 5, like the one I gave up that I spoke of in the first post above.

Mike, again please keep me posted on your Orion. It's a beaut, and I would be proud to own it.

Jason,

I'm surpised you think that $500 is too pricey. Except for what looks like some finger wear on the finish it looks like a great buy. Who knows, some of that may clean up with the propper attention.

Look at this

http://www.bassnw.com/Used%20Basses/alembic_essence_5_st_maple.htm

No, it's not an Orion, none the less, it's a great bass. I think the price is in line with what you would expect to pay for a used five string Orion in "mint" condition anyway.
You can also visit

http://www.basscentral.com

Go to their 'Basses' section and pull up the Alembic listings. They have some nice selections, you'll also find the going price for a new Orion5. It should give you some idea as to what the market is.

Mike

Nothing says "price" like your personal desire to own one or more of these babies. I have found it to be an addiction. I've paid good money for a used SC deluxe because I wanted it. I paid $500 for a spoiler exploiter that was damaged at the jack because it was an addition to my family. Everyone has their limits and priorities. Despite what preferences we all have, any Alembic is something great to own. I just saw a used Orion at GC Totowa for $2400. A new Pedulla 5 was less, hanging right next to it! Anyway, happy hunting and I hope you find a great bass at a great price.

$500?!?! Where did you see that? The one on eBay started at $1999, which is a bit high for me. I would take an Orion (or Epic, for that matter) anyday for $500!

Jason,

It's gone, was there yesterday, must have been the last day. Standard four string, flame maple top, Orion peghead.

The one for $1990 had Signature electronics, that would have been a great deal even at the price. If I'd been paying attention to that one...New Signatures start at $4700 (I think).

Sorry, mate, keep the yees peeled.

Mike
