Hi guys,

Just wanted to see your views on this auction: link

Really tempting, especially given that I'm in the UK with the exchange rate as it is, but surely this is too good to be true? There are a couple of things about the auction which don't seem right: why didn't the seller put a buy it now button, rather than specifying it in the text?

Also, the blurb says shipping to Europe will be around $400, but on contacting him, the seller says shipping and handling is included in the $1500 BIN.

He wasn't able to give me the serial number (the bass is at the shipping company), and he says the LEDs are front and side, not just side, which I'm slightly dubious about, from looking at the pics - but I'm no expert.

Finally, the seller seems to have listed the same bass twice. This could just be an error, but given that I'm already slightly suspicious, that's a bit of a warning sign.

Any views/advice from you guys? Anybody dealt with this chap before and can vouch for him?

Maybe I'm just a jaded cynic and I'm looking for things to be wrong with this . . . ?

Thanks, guys!

K.

there are far better photos around here. The ebay scammer just lifted the photos that brother Didier posted into his scam auction. He has been reported to ebay...

It's back on ebay.
link
Interestingly, it's offered for sale by an authorized Alembic dealer who thinks that Stanley spells his name "Clark". Also, the listing says the item location is U K, United States. I don't know where that is.

$1500 BIN for that bass!?!? I turned this in to Ebay shortly after it was listed. If you looked at the "Other items offered by seller" you saw a bunch of random items also with a 24 hr auction period...huge red flag.

Is this the same listing? I think $1500 BIN is suspicious for this bass. Anyone else?

He posted again early morning 4/23/08, for the SC bass, along with a slew of other guitar postings. He hijacked a legitimate power seller with a flawless record. When I asked for the serial, he gave me an obvious fake. Shortly thereafter, all of the fake listings were pulled.
Clearly, this guy has some skills. His access is consistent.

Makes me shudder to think that I actually got my SC for under 2K on ebay without incident, and grateful to the honest seller who was a delightful guy. After a couple of years of watching the experts spot the scams, I am not sure I would take the chance again.

Would you believe this thing is on EBay again? I sent him the following Email:

Numbnuts,
If you are going to run a scam, at least know something about the product. Alembics are all customs...you would be hard pressed to find 2 that look alike. I don't even know the guy who owns this bass, but I do know the bass...you don't have it. They are hiring at McDonalds.

It's back up on US ebay, too -- I won't bother posting a link, for I'm reporting it now. Should be gone soon.

Here is a copy of the message I sent to Ebay:

Message: Someone has hijacked and is scamming this same listing again, and again, and again. This is at least the fifth time this same instrument has shown up using different people's identities. This is ruining their reputation and yours. Our owners club keeps notifying you of the fraud and it still continues. It really hurts legimitate users of your website. This must STOP please. I have lost all trust and confidence in Ebay. JW

Fraud like this will continue until people stop falling for phishing emails.
eBay has no idea that a new auction is coming from a hijacked account until someone reports it.
