Sigh...newbies bidding it up with 6+ days to go. That's not how to win something cheap...

PS - beautiful bass though!

Could the 8 string be played as 4 string without much issue with string spacing

Probably be just a little on the wide side, but definitely playable. There was a Distillate 8 sold a few months ago that had been reset as a four. In an ideal world, you'd probably want a nut and bridge replacement to better position the strings across the neck, but I am sure it would function if you just pulled out the octave strings. You may need a truss rod adjustment when you take that extra pressure off the neck, too.

That's a beauty of a bass and I wouldn't worry about early bids in the $1000 range. This thing is probably going in the $5000 vicinity, maybe higher, and those little early bids won't make a difference. If we see $4K tomorrow, then I'd agree about the early bidding.

I was wondering that the best way to play a 8 string like this, might be with a pick. Can you play an 8 string with your fingers?

That's a gorgeous bass. If I was feeling much less responsible I would watch and bid on it.

I have a very cheap Rogue 8-string bass - the Musician's Friend brand instrument. It is a great bass for the mere $200 that I paid for it when they had it on sale. I can play it with a pick or finger style. A pick sounds better to my ears as it is more aggressive and "shimmery" for a lack of a better word.

There is few chance to get a Alembic 8string. I hope that someone of club member will be able to win the bidding.

I'm playing my 8string with pick and fingers. Skillfully played 8string bass sounds very rich not only at high frequency range but also low whether it be played with pick or fingers. I like both sound.

Every once in a while something significant goes cheap, as all the lurkers and swoopers fall asleep towards the end of the auction and let a goodie go for a song. Even I would have bid $4,000 on this puppy. I was positive it would go over $4,500? It is a pretty bass, and I have always wanted an 8 String. Well, good for whoever won it. Cheers!

That's one of those deals where someone is going to contact him and offer $4K tomorrow. Might take it, probably won't, but worth a chance if you were willing to pay it for the bass up front and just missed it. If even one lurker was around, it could easily have made $5K.

I got a feeling we are going to see a bunch of nice instruments go for cheap until the economy turns around. If you have the disposable income, now is the time to invest in "collectibles"... whether that be Alembic basses, artwork, or whatever.

Forget collectibles, I want a nice short or medium scale fiver to play.
