Hi, I am a brand new member to the club which I didn't know exsisted. I hapened to find out about the Club while talking to an Alembic rep on the phone. I was trying to find out what my bass was worth, and I was told to check out the Club. I was shocked to see how much Alembics seem to lose in value. The guitar is one of the best made guitars I,ve ever seen.

Yep... pretty big depreciation up front, but then they hold their value pretty well. Of course now is not the time to be trying to sell ANYthing.

Welcome to the club- As Mike mentioned, they do take a steep hit if you get them new, but used Alembics hold their value VERY well.

Post a few pictures of that Epic when you get a chance.

Welcome to the club David. In regard to this being a tough market to sell something in. I wonder how long it will take them to sell this: first line production 1998 GIBSON LES PAUL ULTIMA
Price: $850,000.00.

For those interested in buying it.

No need to either apoligize or remove, Carl - it's a beautiful (if obscenely over-priced) bit of guitar porn.

Hey Dave

Back to your original comment, Its something that we deal with on every level. You buy a porsche (and a damn fine machine it is for 70-90k) and in only a few years its worth 20k. Conversly, I bought a 68 camaro in 1972 for 3k with 2000 miles on it. It was the hottest thing on the street (and a tin can piece of S**T), but there weren't any porsches...least not where I was. Now the camaro is worth 500k and the porsche is discarded. I guess what I'm trying to say is value has no relation to function, workmanship and quality. It's how many other people want them. The qback on the football team in small town america was driving a Camaro in 1972... not a porsche and thats why we want them (yeah I was). A lot of other people must have wanted Camaro's when I was a kid cause they are paying a lot more than 3k for them now and I wouldn't take one for 500 dollars. But I'll still pay a premium for a great piece of machinery...car or guitar. I'm not saying that a real vintage 50's strat or tele or a les paul may not be a nice instrument... but values are all screwed up.

Toby, you have me scratching my head ha ha. How did you know I had an Epic. Is that the model that looses the most value the quickest, or is that the one that everyone complains about the most?

Boy you sure hit the nail on the head Barry about people having values all screwed up. When it comes to guitars, it always seems to come down to wheather or not the right guy made them popular or not.If the right guy endorses it then everyone will want one, and the value will be high

Dave,

What Elwood said above ^ Click on your name and your profile pops up.

Epics are great basses- I've never heard of anyone complaining once they've played them. In fact there are lots of folks who probably wouldn't trade their Epics for anything else.

Thank you Art. I was not aware of the edit feature. But since I have not received any complaints, I will leave it this time. Maybe we should take a vote. Well, I think Peter kind of likes it, lol. Now to get back on point, I agree with Barry's statement on values. But it applies to most things in an affluent society. I don't want to get too philosophical here, but humankind has always placed value on certain material things. Let’s look at those things referred to as precious, i.e. Metals-gold, platinum, silver; Stones-Jagger, Richards, Jones, lol…diamonds, rubies, emeralds, etc. These things are deemed precious and valued in many societies based upon their beauty and rarity. Beauty is a very subjective measure and not easily quantifiable; however, it based upon the perception of the majority. Rarity is not subjective; something is either rare or it is not. As Alembic owners, we appreciate the beauty and rarity of our instruments, and we all know for a fact, yes a fact, that if all Gibson, Fender, and other guitar owners spent any time with an Alembic, they would certainly recognize the superior quality of these instruments. However, quality is not a prerequisite for value or collectability, as mentioned by Barry in his Camaro analogy. Tone, feel, and playability are a few other factors, but again, these are subjective attributes. So throughout our existence, we have appreciated some things and depreciated others. However, it seems that some of the most ridiculous things are now highly valued. Let me now give my definition of ridiculous, as the kids say…not! Sorry for the babbling, but this old man sometimes gets a little carried away. I almost segued into ideas, family, religion, politics…just kidding!

The knobs I put on when I bought the bass because I wanted the knobs to match the gold tuning keys, and the gold strap locks. I didn't buy my epic from guitar center. the SN is 95W9424 USA. She plays like a dream , and sounds great !

Hi David, welcome to the board!

When you get time you might want to check out our FAQ and Must Reads sections; lots of useful information about your bass and Alembics in general.

Also, hold on to those old knobs; if you ever want to sell your bass, the original knobs will add to the value of the bass.
