I actually just emailed him a few days ago! (strange you posted this.)
Hes sending me some pics of the bass on monday. Id be happy to post them so everyone can see for themselves if this bass looks like a true 73 or not.
He seems like a very nice guy, and seemed surprisingly genuine... lets hope the bass is too!! :-)

I told him I was very interested in buying the bass, but needed to see some photos, and also a copy of the build-sheet before i could make any commitments...
Hey, for 3,500 I would fly down to Tucson from Vermont and pick it up myself!

Just got another email back from the seller. He says he used the bass extensively on a few tours with his cover band. As of now, he has the bass on cosignment at some music store, which is trying to sell it for close to 6,000. There hasnt been any interest, and personally I dont think the people who came in and saw it relized exactly what they were beholding, (if it is in fact from 1973)

He said he has the buildsheet, and if I can verify its authenticity, along with the credibility of the insturment itself, then I am VERY excited to say that I may soon be adding a true gem to my collection!

However, only time will tell... I'll keep the forum updated as I learn more!

Thats good to hear! If I did not drop the cash on my new Alembic custom order I was going to pick this 73 up for myself after I followed up to see if it was legit. I am glad it may end up with someone here in the Club.

Jason, I was glad to read the post about your new custom order. That must be very exciting for you! Is it your first custom bass project with Alembic? I've had countless ideas for my own, and I'm sort of waiting around for both the right idea to come along, and for enough funds to become available to act on it.

If the 73 bass does turn out to be legitimate, then I'd say we have quite a find on our hands! One can only hope though...

Best of luck on your custom order! I'm sure you will be more than pleased!

Thanks, My first Alembic bass was a 95 Europa 5 string I bought brand new because I could not wait for a custom order LOL and I got a great price on it. The Newsted Elan is my first actual custom from Alembic.

Buying a Alembic used is the best bang for the buck there is right now especially with the economy the way it is. My regret is not picking up the Elan 5 string with the quilted maple top on Ebay a few months ago. The seller had a opening bid for 2100, I just could not get past that purple finish.

It sounds like this guy is the owner of Tiran Porter's '73 Series 1, which is now on consignment for $6K at Guitar Showcase in San Jose, CA. Pics of that bass are up on gbase.com. If not, and if this ad is legit, it would be one hell of a coincidence.

while 6k seemed a bit steep (even for a bass with that background) 3.5k seems like something many of us will race to pay for it. hope it's legit. good luck to those on their way to the southwest.

Last I heard, $3.5K was the going rate for _any_ Series bass, let alone one with that kind of history. If all is legit and the bass is healthy, run, do not walk.

I posted an answer to this yesterday but for some reason it never made it. I inquired about the bass. I live about 100 miles form Tucson and for Porters bass I'd snap it up. I'm a part time basser but a full time 6 stringer. He sent me photos and it is a 75 not a 73. He was not trying to fool anyone. he just didn't remember. In any case, its still available.

I've been rediscovering the Doobies lately, mostly because of this thread. Man, I would love to have that bass. but - timing not right.

I'll repeat. I have pictures of the Tucson Bass and it doesn't have much resemblance at all to the Doobies Bass. I tried to post it earlier but it didn;'t work. Here's another try.
