Hi, here are some pic's of Ara's Distillate.
I met Ara late last year and purchased an absolutely pristine Distillate with a Koa top from him.

Dave, since I had these pics, I thought I would go ahead and post them. Ara is a stand up, honest guy. I can't be more pleased with the Koa Distillate I got from him.

Is that Control Cavity backplate Gold Plated?
The one on my Europa is Gold Plated even though the hardware is not.

Hello Jazzyvee-

The control cavity backplate is chrome- perhaps the picture or room lighting has made the backplate appear gold.

Standard scale for a distillate is medium. It's certainly a very nice distillate, but at $5800...well, that's about double what a distillate in nice shape - such as this one - seems to be going for currently.

While Paul is generally right about the going price for Distillate basses, this is like none of those. The hardware is plated and there are side LEDs, neither of which is on the typical $2K Distillate. Additionally, this bass looks like it is either a lot newer than the early 80s, or has been back to the factory for a refinish job, though the year of manufacture wasn't specified. The seller says there isn't a scratch on it, and it certainly appears to be like new in the pics.

I think a lot of us have some level of sticker shock on used Persuader/Spoiler/Distillate basses. If you look back just two or three years, Persuaders and Spoilers were available for under $1000 up to maybe $1200, and Distillates would regularly trade for $1000 up to $1500 for a minty one. The used Alembic economy has changed since then and a Distillate under $2K is a rarity, though I can't remember one ever being sold in a private transaction for more than $3K in the US.

I sold mine for $2,600, 5 string w/LEDs, no back wood. Went in about 2 weeks from sale posting. May have been able to get more if I had really tried. Not nearly as good condition as this one if it's pristine.

Just a concern of mine, but it's there internet etiquette against hijacking someone's for sale threads. I mean, I know you guys are trying to be informative and helpful, but I feel some unspoken rule is being violated here.

Isold a mint Distillate 5 to a member for $2900. No led's, if mine had em' I would have kept it. But there is a buyer for every level. Try the quote generator for a new one with these options and see what it runs.

Thanks Danno for the fiver she's the nicest playing 5 string i've ever put my hands on and i used to have a series 2 fiver! Price was more than reasonable, in fact i would have paid double since this is the perfect bass for me, like an extension of my body. Plus led's have a way of leaving "trails" in my vision.(too much kool-aid at dead shows over the years.) Thanx again Danno!!!!!

No one in their right mind is going to pay that much for that bass. Sorry to rain on your parade, man. Cut the price in half and you'll probably start to get some serious inquiries.

Not hatin'. Just being honest.

I would propose that, in spite of the poster's claim that the price is firm, anyone interested should make reasonable offers direct to him. The seller isn't a regular here and probably doesn't have a handle on the market the way most of us do. I think that almost everyone would agree that $5800 isn't likely to happen, but the only opinions that really matter are the ones of the people willing to shell out hard cash for this bass.

I would also suggest that Ara search the site here a bit for sales of other Distillate basses and Alembics in general for a fact-based view of the market.

Ara here!

Once again, I've been away-
I do apologize if I've inadvertently ruffled anyone's sensabilities regarding what I've asked for my bass. I really do not keep up with these matters and for that I sincerely apologize.

Simply, the bass is really in a new/unused condition.
I will consider selling my Alembic for $4000 to the right party. But not for less. Who ever ends up with this special bass will be very happy.

I do not need to sell this instrument, but it's a shame because I don't use it. If anyone is interested, please feel free to contact me with any inquiry.

Have a wonderful week *

That is a beautiful bass Ara, as a Distillate owner myself, I am in awe of it. I believe you have the right to ask whatever price you wish for it. The value of any item is determined between the seller & the purchaser. If it is too expensive, well, then move on to the next item for sale. It is up to Ara to lower the price, accept a reasonable offer or not sell it at all. Please let the free market run it's course... Of course I am a lefty and do not have $5800 or even $4000 at this time for any bass, just my humble opinion, but I hope someone keeps it in the Club. Thanks for sharing it with us and welcome aboard.

By the way Ara, what year is this Distillate? I have never seen an early 80's model so clean. Has it been in the case for 25 years or is it recent construction using the old Distillate template? Beautiful either way. Thanks Ara.

I don't believe it is recent construction as it has what appears to be the old power LED on the front. I'm not sure when they dropped this feature but the bass was most likely built before then.

Hello everyone! Ara here*
This bass is a 1981 Alembic Distillate that after many many years of my playing had to be spruced up!
I sent if back to Alembic (and paid alot $$$ for the revamp) and they did it just right- but then I have never picked it up again- for some reason, it's just too nice - I don't want to scratch the bass or accidently bump it.
In a way, it's not the same instrument for me.

If you are looking for a special cream-puff Alembic Distillate, then here it is!

I don't need the money - but I'm not going to give the bass away either. I just feel annoyed that it sits and goes unused. Someone, somewhere will be very grateful to own this bass.
However, if Karma has it, that it stays with me, then I accept that : )

Ara

Did you have new pickups installed? My 81 Distillate's pickups do not have Alembic on them, nor do others I've seen. Just wondering if these are newer versions of the original pups, or if they are different.

Colin
