I know I will regret this.. but here we go: This is a 1987 Spoiler 4 String shortscale. It is in great condition, and only has some oxidation at the bridge. No scratches or anything like that. It Actually is a shortscale, and does not have the regular Spoiler Shape, but a slightly modified one, that I have not seen before. It has a beautiful maple top and also the Purpleheart/Maple neck. It plays and sounds flawless. I have the original hardshell case, and also the paperwork. I really like this Bass, but right now I just play it too little, and most of the time use my Jazz Basses. I dont like the Idea of shipping an istrument of this caliber, so I would prefer a personal pick up for now. I am actually going to buy a nice upright, so I realized I might have to let this one go, if the right offer is made;-) I will definetly dream of owning an alembic again. But right now I am young and trying to make a living by playing , and at the moment I might not be able to keep it. Anyway, anybody interested in this Bass and located in Germany or Europe?? Just shoot me an email. Oh yeah, and if you are in the area, of course you are welcome to stop by and check it out.
Thanks,
Chris.

That's about $2800 US. This is a unique instrument, so someone who gets into the shape and the shortest scale might go for it. It's significantly more expensive than any "regular" Spoiler though, even considering the European market.

Did you catch the "R" serial number that specifically denotes a 3/4-body Spoiler? I have never seen one before, but wonder if there might be a few more out there based upon it having an actual letter assigned. Maybe a Japanese market item?

Hey Guys. I understand that my price is not a "steal" and there are probably considerably cheaper spoilers out there.. im not in a rush, or lets say too eager to let this one go, but if i get this price i am willing to sell, in order to finance my upright.. and yes you are right,.. i got this bass from Japan, the Japanese seem to take very good care of their instruments;-).. a fellow member in europe posted his spoiler here for 1800 Euros..http://alembic.com/club/messages/395/61836.html?1236118872
.. so i figured since my bass got the purpleheart stringers, beautiful maple top, is in great condition with orginal case etc. and a rare shortscale spoiler, 2200 euros might be okay.. which is about the same i paid importing it from japan.. hmm something is still telling me I should keep this one, and not let it it go.. its even from 87 just like me, maybe we were meant to be;-)

Chris, I don't think it is at all unreasonable to ask that price for a unique instrument like that. It is neither a typical Spoiler, nor in typical condition for an '87. It may take a while and will certainly require locating the right buyer, but I wouldn't call it impossible. There just aren't many short scale basses out there that aren't SC Signature models. With used Signatures regularly going over $3K in the US, and probably 3000+ Euros over there, a mint short scale Spoiler with purpleheart in the neck doesn't feel unreasonable at 2200 Euros. I think anything up to $2000 US would have it move pretty quickly over here.

You definitely have a healthy mindset. This is a special bass. It will sell for what you're asking, or you'll keep it. Good luck!

Hi, Chris,

many greetings from Wiesbaden. Bob and the other guys are right on, the price is not unreasonable. I would buy your baby in a heartbeat, just to help you out of course... unfortunately for you, I want to keep my wife entertained, too :-)

Do you plan to visit the music fair in Frankfurt in April ? An excellent place to meet other musicians and some Alembic weirdos as well.

cheers, Christian

hey Chris,
I think you should NOT sell this absolute amazing and fantastic Spoiler! It´s in great shape and looks so fantastic, I think this baby also sounds great? It´s a Bass for life.
Wish I have the money to buy your Spoiler, but a few weeks ago I get my Signatures and for the next few years money is tight

Damn, that bass is giving me the GAS. Beautiful top and shape and short scale (my personal preference).

Hrm, maybe if this bass is still available in August (when I'm in Spain) and the exchange rate gets better...

hi my name is Nuno, and i live in Lisbon, Portugal.
I am interrested to get an old Alembic Spoiler bass in Black like Cliff Burton´s (RIP) bass or in another color.
And i´m also looking for a Aria Pro SB Black n Gold 1 just like Cliff´s or a ARIA SB-1000 ALL BLACK
my e-mail is nunoharris@gmail.com.

I also want to trade my 2001 fender steve harris Lake placid blue with maple neck, with burgundy pickguard and with steve harris signature and eddie decal on the headstock , a very rare model indeed. for one of those Alembic Spoiler or a Aria SB Black n Gold or a ARIA SB-1000 BLACK
say something....
