I'm seriously considering selling or trading my 1981 Series I 4 string cocobolo Alembic bass. It has LEDs, adjustable nut, master volume, PU selector near the bridge and the lower bout is cutaway to the 24th fret. This has been a working bass and has the appropriate minor dings and scratches, but is still an awesome instrument. I have found myself in a situation where I always need a low B string and this obviously doesn't have one of those. | ||

More and more people have been telling me that. My wife and two of my brothers refer to it as, at the very least, a family heirloom. One brother put it this way: "I think "heirloom" is the most appropriate term. Think about it--it's probably the ONLY time a Ford has ever gotten the best that money could buy (in ANY category!), and I applaud you for your foresight on that. And its lasting power is testament to its quality. You don't want us to be sitting around in 2013 reminiscing and regretting, do you? (now THAT's an emotional argument!!!! ; ) ) Is the sweet sound of the Alembic consistently duplicable (if duplicable at all) on any other instrument? Just my thoughts. Think of it this way--if you were putting feelers out on the internet about any other bass besides the Alembic, would it create nearly so much interest? I'm not so sure what the answer may be; I'm way out of touch with these things. [he is a jazz pianist] You've had that thing for nearly (more than?) 20 years... Let me know if you think I'm too nostalgic. Regardless of the benefits of replacing it with a 5-string, I would advise against getting rid of it, but that's just me. Measure twice, cut once!" I think deep down inside that he's right about this. Hmmm. Now I guess I'll just have to voice things a bit higher... Thanks for all of your feedback and interest on this. John- Great call! If the bass has been that much a part of your life, it's not right to sell it just to get another one. I have some very nice Alembics, but I would part with all of them (if I HAD to) long before I'd part with my 1934 upright that I've been playing for 25+ years. Think of other options: There are often Essence 5's out there for around $1,500-$2,000 (if you want to stay with thru-body). The Epics are not bad at all and still sound like an Alembic (granted, nothing sounds like a Series, but...). You might also consider some of the Octavizer pedals or effects. I've heard that some actually track very well and sound reasonably good. Glad you're hangin' on to the '81!! C-Ya.............wayne | ||

I did that for a couple of years (in fact I have a 12-string strung that way), but the B was rather wimpy with relatively poor sustain. I would imagine it had a lot to do with the tiny tiny long neck resonating at that low frequency. The E string, on the other hand, sounded the tightest it ever had (like the A sounds awesome on a bass tuned E-A-D-G) I might just revisit it though, now that you mention it. I know that using a .130 as opposed to a .128 makes a big difference. Any suggestions that would help give it some meat? John |
