Just thought I would pass this on since a lot of us buy and sell on craigslist. I lot of people, including me, have been getting scam responses to items for sale recently. The first response just asks if the item is still for sale. When you reply that it is, the next response is like this: Hello... I really appreciate your response to my mail.I want you to consider it sold, pls do withdraw the advert from craigslist to avoid disturbance from other customer. I want you to know that i will be paying via bank certified check. I will need you to provide me with the following.information to facilitate the mailing of the check and it will be delivered to you by The UPS. 1.....Full name to write on the check. 2.....Full Physical address to post the check. 3.....Home & Cell Phone to contact you **Immediately you have the payment my mover will come for the pick up** Thanks.. I was wary after the first response; and upon seeing the second, I figured it was a scam. A Google search confirmed. What happens next if you send your name and address is that he will send you a fraudulent bank check for more than the price of the stuff your selling; typically $1,000 more. He'll then send an email telling you his secretary made a mistake and that the extra $1,000 had been intended for the movers, and ask you to cash the check, keep your portion plus a little extra for your trouble, and send the remaining excess to an address he'll give you. Sometime after you've cashed the check, your bank will inform you that the check was a fraudulent, and you're out whatever you sent to him. (Message edited by davehouck on May 24, 2009) |
