I just got one of those Electro Harmonix 22 Caliber amps; if you are not familiar with this crazy thing, it's a guitar amplifier in a box the size of a small stomp box, weighs less than most effects pedals, and cranks like mad, and sounds good, too. Continuing with the "mini" theme, can anyone recommend a very small speaker cabinet to go with this? Did I see some small Alembic-made speakers advertised for sale here not too long ago? I can't help but brag about my Zvex Nano amp in this thread. It's 1/2 watt dimed, all tube, and is mostly housed in one of his pedal enclosures (though to be fair, the tubes and transformer are on the top surface). There are a number of discussions regarding small speaker cab's on his forum, for reasons similar to your own. Maybe it would be helpful. | ||

I like the Zvex Nano. I had considered getting one; they do sound great. I went with the EH because of the price difference. I will do a search for threads involving small speaker cabs; if anybody has a link, that would be great. | ||

I have a 2x12 Earcandy cab. Here's a link to the article about my cab on the Earcandy site. Tim makes an excellent product as far as I can tell. I also have a stock Earcandy 2x12 that I bought off of craigslist. I ordered the custom without speakers and loaded it with a Tone Tubby and a JBL D-120 reconed in hemp by Tone Tubby. One thing though, if you get a custom it might take a lot longer than expected (mine did). Sound familiar? I think it's SOP for the custom music instrument and accessory industry. Bill, tgo | ||

If you want to see a real odd pair, try running the tiny Zinky battery powered amp into a marshall 4x12 cab. It actually will power it and sound pretty good. | ||

I got the 1 x 6" cab, tried it last night, and it has some gnarly-sounding artifacts at anything above a low volume, like the cone is defective. I have a call and email in to Tim at Ear Candy cabs. | ||

While this is only TINY compared to Marshall Stacks..... Get yourself one or two of those older EA 110 cabs that is a three way cab from 12 tears ago. Power it with a dual mono block Marshall (9100 or 9200) and an Alembic pre-amp. Use only Sylainia 5751 or 7025 NOS or even a really beat-up pair in the preamp. You won't believe it!!! It even sounds great on BASS! | ||

While that sounds like a great portable combination, my search parameters included not only a tiny amp and speaker, but a diminutive price, as well. Between the Ear Candy speaker and the E H amp, I have $200 invested. While I am waiting on a replacement driver for the Ear Candy cab, last weekend I used the E H amp with my 1 x 15" Alamo cabinet (loaded with a Jensen from a long time ago...) and a Boss reverb pedal. It was VERY satisfying. | ||

I got a replacement speaker from Tim at Ear Candy. I was dismayed to find that I am having the same problem with the new one. So I did some more investigating (something I should have done first). The speaker sounds fine with two other amps I tried. The little 22 Caliber amp sounds fine with another speaker I have. The only thing I can think of that can be causing this amp/speaker combination to be problematic is the ohm rating of the cabinet (4 ohms). Electro Harmonix says the amp will work with 4 - 16 ohms loads, but that 8 ohms is preferable. It's a theory... but only a theory. I wonder if things would be different if I had ordered an 8-ohm cabinet from Ear Candy rather than the 4-ohm one. | ||

Typically the lower the load impedance of the speaker the higher the resulting RMS watts output of the amp. Therefore as an example if an amp is rated for 22 watts RMS @ 8 OHMS you might be getting 44 watts RMS @ 4 OHMS. This is the case in many amp designs . What is the output power rating of the amp in question ? | ||

It's supposed to be 22 watts, but I don't know if that's RMS, or at what resistance. I doubt that little amp could put out 44 watts RMS... but then again, 22 watts seems like a lot for something that tiny! | ||

I just got an email from Electro-Harmonix, and here's what they had to say: "Hi Ben, Unfortunately the unit does not work with a 4 ohm cabinet. We do not have a fix for this at this moment so if the unit does not work for you, you may want to return it." Which kind of conflicts with their product description, " Electro-Harmonix is pleased to announce the new 22 Caliber Power Amp, a versatile 22-watt guitar head that fits in the palm of your hand. Just plug it into any 4-, 8- or 16-ohm speaker, and you'll get a big, sweet musical sound." NOT NECESSARILY!!!! | ||

Great service from Ear Candy; not-so-great from E.H. I could do it myself but the speakers are not exactly the same size, so he wants to do it himself. | ||

Tim has been great. I shipped the cab back to him for the new, 8-ohm, speaker to be installed. The new speaker has very different specs from the other; it's rated at 100 watts and has more lows and less highs, which, if I had my druthers, I would prefer anyway. We'll see how it sounds when I get it back. | ||

OK, I finally got the cabinet back from Ear Candy on Friday, with the custom 100-watt 6-in. speaker (8-ohm) in it. Almost 3 months to get this thing, with all the glitches and hitches... but as we Alembicians know, you want high quality custom stuff you have to wait for it. It looks the same but is quite a bit heavier. I will be testing it out in the next couple of days and will report back. |
