Hi all! To help fund my new Series I, I need to liquidate a few things. I have a very early F1X that I think must be a prototype as there is no serial number and the graphics and layout are different from the current layout. It's not like the old F2B styling and not like the current styling. It's also got a mod that Ron designed for me: pre and post effects loops. I wanted to have an effects loop in there that was post eq so I could have my reverbs and delays be after the eq. It sounds weird to me the other way round. It's a great preamp, but I just don't use it much anymore and with a stereo bass on the way, I'll be using my F2B. I'd like to get $500 shipped in the US. I'll get pictures up when I can, probably over the weekend. Cosmetically, it's not new, but it's not horribly beat up. I'm not sure what tube is in it, but I remember being very partial to military 5751s the last time I went through a tube experimentation phase, so it might be one of those. Get in touch if you have any questions! |

Hello Edwin! regarding your "tube experimentation phase ", have you ever come across any gold pin CBS 7729 tubes( another 12ax7 substitute )? |

No, I haven't seen those. In fact, I've never heard of them. What can you tell me? In my experience, the F1X doesn't seem to be as sensitive to tube experimentation as the F2B or my Fender amps. Preamp tubes, assuming they are of decent quality, are not as big a deal as power amp tubes. However, the urge to tinker always is lurking! |

They (7729) are slightly lower gain ,very low noise and low microphonic VERY clean and have flat "sounding" response characteristics. They are quite rare and hard to find and obtain ! I am currently experimenting with Telefunken ECC83/ 12ax7, I have so called matched pairs of both smooth plate and ribbed plate varieties. I am experimenting with both an older Alembic metal knob blue case F-2B and a more contemporary F-1X design. Both are stock Alembic . |
