Considering the condition of the bass, he should.

Well, $603 current bid and no reserve . . . I see little wrong with that. I would worry more about the guy with the awful feedback rating selling the Goldielocks 5 string Series II (A 'featured' bass) for $6,000. Bass looks worth the bucks, but the seller just has too low of feedback to really be taken seriously - in my opinion. Well . . . I guess I will just have to keep looking.

Nigel, what are you looking to get? I know of several nice Series basses that didn't pass the "sheriff test" and would be glad to help.

Kungfusheriff,

I'd also be interested in what you passed up. Also, I emailed you about the Essence, but never got a reply. (This was several weeks ago.)

Gee, I want so little in life. Let's see . . .
I want a Series II five-string in either coco bolo, macassor ebony, or walnut. Omega body a must. Gold plated parts a must, other wise it is a grand to have this done. Non-bookmatched to center - I love the neck's maple and purpleheart or ebony laminates far too much to covered them up. I would prefer an inlaid logo, but not a must. Front LEDs optional.
Actually, if Malthumb would be kind enough to donate his MKC to my cause, I believe I would pretty much be set. I like the coco bolo and solid body concept, and for me, the heavier the better. Yep, I think that would cover it nicely.
I have a very nice five string, but I am not happy with the electronics, and have never played an Alembic fiver. I am afraid if I do, I will obsess on it and have to have one. Right now it is just a nice thought. As for the five on eBay, I don't like it that much. Beautiful bass, but not for me. It will make a nice addition to a new member's household, maybe. Well, as soon as he drops the price a grand. I don't believe I have seen one go for $5,000 on eBay, yet . . .

Come on....snap out of it....my MKC ain't goin' nowhere. I'm on record as saying my kids are gonna inherit this and my Series I. And my wife would probably object to me offering the kids as part of a package deal.

Good luck on the hunt. I'll keep my eyes open for ya.

Peace,

James

Bob, my sincere apologies.
I attempted to dash off a response right away (a declinantion, I'm afraid), but hotmail must have eaten it. You get what you pay for, I suppose.
I hope I didn't put you out.
And now for the rest of you, so hungry for eye-candy...
OK, you want my list? My little black book of beautiful secondhand basses no one else knows about? I'm afraid I know of no jaw-dropping Series II fivers, sorry PN, but there are a few gems I've been keeping track of, some of which have been referenced in this group.
First place to call is Joey G's Music in NYC (joeygmusic.com). Last I heard, they had an '80s short-scale S2 in maple that a lucky buyer could land for just north of $2K US, and several equally attractive Spoilers marked at about a grand each. Their primary business is importing exotic handbuilt basses from overseas, so secondhand Alembics don't seem to draw their clientele's eye.
Their loss, I'd say.
Second call is to Lancaster Music Corporation in Bryn Mawr, PA, who have a very pretty '77 S1 tagged at $2500; this ten-pound longscale bass has been seen in the Alembic Club before.
There is a '79 short-scale S1 with bookmatched bubinga top on consignment on thelowend.net; it has only four strings, but the $3K price tag is negotiable.
I also know of several Series basses that have been in Guitar Center's possession for some years, primarily due to their insanely high price tags, but this is polite conversation and I don't like to sully it with talk of folk like that.
The very courteous folks at Galaxy Music in Atlanta have had an ('89?) Elan 4 for what seems like forever; its lovely koa top is a sight to behold but the all-maple body and PJ pickups scared me off. But they're having a liquidation sale, so who knows.
Now watch--none of this is a secret, but mayhap someong will be helped. Have at 'em, my wife will thank you.

joeygmusic.com
They do not show their used inventory at this site, but then I cannot log in as a dealer. Did you telephone them for what they had, or am I not accessing their site properly? Kind of interesting place. I have not seen some of the basses there since Bunny Bass closed their site. I liked Bunny Bass, but I simply could not see paying money to look through their archives at pictures I had already seen for free. Tangent? Where?

Tangent? Huh? We call that highjacking a thread round these parts, feller.
I saw those basses on their site before they revamped it to its current, useless incarnation. Was I time when you could actually see what they had to offer, but that was long before your time, before the Great War.
Wha?
Yeah, BunnyBass was great, esp. that SSBS2 they had for five or six minutes. Mmm.
If you sound like money to Joey's boys, they'll get off the couch to answer questions. But prepare to wait.

I've been checking out that Elan four string on E-bay. Does anyone know about that model? Does it compare to the Europa? The Elan looks like a beautiful bass. Thanks for the help

Hi Ed; that is indeed a beautiful Elan you're looking at on Ebay. If you ordered this bass new today, the retail would probably run about $4,625. The quilted Maple top is a very nice feature of this bass. With the Q switch, the electronics are a step up from the Essence controls. The Europa's electronics are a step up from this particular bass with the addition of bass and treble boost/cut switches. Also the Europa comes standard with Purpleheart neck laminations. And the Europa has two accent veneers between the body and the top wood instead of one.
