i'm looking for an old american or japanese "beater" bass. something that has a great sound but just doesn't look fantastic. i'm in need of one because i don't want anything happening to my nice bass while just jamming and want to be able to jump around without having a big loss if anything happens to it(but still will take amazing care of it) looking for something like a charvel 3b, jackson bass, any old american fender(precision, jazz, etc.), aria, westone, teisco, or just let me know if you've got something you can live without. also have a couple basses i may trade if it'll help make a good deal go through i know this may not be the right place for this but don't want to pay to use talkbass :-) ~Taylor |

I've got an extra Guild B-301 and a Gibson Victory Artist Bass I don't use all that much. The Victory weighs a ton; the Guild is pretty beat but functional (I was thinking of having it restored and Alembicised when I got around to it if I kept it). I've also got a Peavey Dyna Bass that's pretty cool, and it's in pretty good shape. |

I just found a good beater bass; it's a DeArmond Pilot. It has all the makings of a real cheap-o: made in Indonesia, minimal controls (pickup blend, volume, tone), fair-to-middlin' fit-and-finish, mediocre hardware, etc. But when I checked it out, it balanced nicely, and is very lightweight, the tuners work, and the truss rod works. I figured I could deal with it's shortcomings later. I put some black nylon tapewound strings on it and shielded the control cavity with foil tape, ensuring the ground wire to the bridge was secure. Then I did the usual set-up stuff, truss rod, intonation and string height, and pickup height. The bass is now quite usable and actually sounds very good. 'Twas worth the $100. An old Aria or Yamaha BB or TRB or one of the early Fender active basses like a Prodigy or Lyte or an early ESP (not a later one) or a nice Mexi Fender or a better yet Japan fender might go for not too much and still sound good. |
