I am very interested in this auction. Is anyone in this club already bidding on it? Any concerns about it's age? What do you think is a good sale price? (Don't answer that if you're bidding on it) Kevin |

I don't know about the price of used gear really, but the only concern for an old F-2B that I can imagine is the deterioration of the foam supporting the filter capacitors. If you wind up with an older F-2B, replace the supporting foam, and hopefully the filter caps haven't vibrated off their leads already. It's $75 to get them replaced if they have. On this particular listing, they mention it works. The power cord looks a little funny, but can't tell for sure. |

Goatfoot, Are you spikemaster? Did you win the auction? It is good to know that these things are sturdy and not too much can go wrong with them. I just bought another one too. I got it off EBay a couple of days ago. It was listed with a Buy It Now price of $300. The person selling it bought it in the mid 70's from the Grateful Dead's crew. It is an early one too serial # 102. |

Nah, wasn't me. I waited too long. I'm still looking. LMK how you like your F2B when it arrives. Kevin |

Here is the F2-B I got off of Ebay. Actually, I think it is just an F2. I don't know much about it, but it looks real old. Older than I have seen. It has a serial number stamped on the back of 102, but that may be the year it was made. Here are some pictures of it.

I have been messing with 3 different sets of tubes, so I really have not made up my mind about the sound yet. But, either there is something wrong with it, or the controls are set up differently than the F2b we all know. It seems that the midrange control actually controls more of the bottom end. Strange. Almost as though the bass and mid controls are swapped. Hard to tell right now, I just fired it up last night, and I ran it to a power amp and through headphones. I will try to connect it up properly tonight to see what it really does. It may go to a gig with me on Thursday if it seems ok. |

The only difference between an F-2 and and F-2B should be the mono output (there isn't one on the F-2). We didn't make very many of these at all, probably less than 10. The decoration is transfer letters that my dad rubbed on (notice there are no number dials). |

This is just an update on this early pre amp. Last night I had a bit of time to finally mess around with it. I swapped out the old RCA tubes and put in a set of Sovtec tubes. No change. The bass control still acted like a mid, and the mid boosted the bottom, but only a little. I opened it back up and took a closer look. The wire that connects the bass pot to the circut board on BOTH bass pots was disconnected. Of course I broke out the soldering iron and re connected these 2 leads. After that, the pre amp worked perfectly. The controls now did what they were supposed to do. I can't imagine why these were disconnected. I also wonder if they were ever even connected. I did not see where any of the insulation was stripped back off of the wire. Strange. Well, they are soldered back in place, and when hooked up to a small BGW 45 watt power amp, this pre amp sounds FAT. Mica - thanks for the info you gave on this unit. I was starting to think that it was a complete mystery. I have not seen another like it. Being that this one is so old, could you possibly guess a year that it was made? Is this one of the ones from the late 60's? Michael (Message edited by dela217 on April 14, 2004) |
