I know I am going to regret this. But I am going to part with one of my older Series basses. It is a 1974 and serial number 49. It can be seen in the Showcase section. I am going to post some decent pictures later, but I am going to be brutally honest. It is a small body, with a short scale neck. The top laminate is birds eye maple, that is really pretty, and sort of figured, almost quilted. The core is mahogany and it has a walnut back. The neck laminates are made up of maple with walnut. The headstock veneers on the front look like cocobolo and it has the hand cut inlaid sterling silver logo. The back of the headstock looks like walnut and maple. The bass is in VERY GOOD overall condition. It does have its share of problems though. This bass originally came with Schaller keys. The owner of this bass before me had to have them replaced in a hurry and they were replaced with Grovers. Not bad, but not original. The frets could use some work. There are spots in the higher register that the frets seem too high. This is around fret 20 or so. Way up there. The frets close to the nut are worn and have obviously been filed before. A fret dress is in order. It is playable as is, but not perfect. Also this bass would benefit from the Alembic series upgrade. It works as it should, but is noisy. I have used this bass on small gigs where going through the PA was not needed. That way, I could keep the noise down to a minimum. Running this bass through a PA would be ok, but hum would be noticible between songs. In the showcase section, the bass is pictured with black pickups. I got these pickups in an attempt to quiet things down. It worked a good bit. But I am selling the bass with the original diaper tan pickups in it. I would like to keep the quieter black pickups for another noisy bass I have! The bass comes with an older Alembic power supply that is stereo only, with no mono output. It also comes with a hardshell case and power supply. If interested shoot me an email or something. I will try to post some detail pics later. $1800.00

Michael

I wish I had a better camera! The birds eyes in the picture look too dark. The camera does not capture it's real beauty. The top in real life is much yellower rather than brownish. It is hard for the camera to capture the quilts too.

A couple of other things worth mentioning.

The strings on this bass are very close to the body. Someone used to the newer Alembics will have trouble slapping and popping. I don't, but I am very used to this. Just thought I'd mention it.

Also this bass has a better balance than most short scale basses. The strap button is positioned so that the strap supports more of the neck. If you look at the shot of the rear of the bass, you can see the button in the heel of the neck/body joint.

Michael,
I recall seeing an Alembic in the old Strings-n-Things print ad that had the large tuning keys. I assumed they were the large open-geared large-post Schallers, but now that I see your bass, I'm wondering if it isn't the same bass as in the ad? Beautiful bass, by the way. I would love to own a short/small sometime, if just for the butter factor...

"The more i see her ... the more I want her ..." oh ...huh ....or was that a song?!?!
My wife has hidden her nylons so ...I'm in trouble!

Paul the bad one

PS: it is asked already somewhere, but has you any idea what it would cost to bring this bass back to "modern"? I mean: working on the frets and the electronics??

Andrew,
If you could deal with the funky control placement, then a small standard seems like it would be just the ticket. While I wouldn't be keen on modifying a historically-significant bass from Alembic's earlier years, I can easily imagine picking up a later model small standard and having the mothership replace the nut and bridge to make it a lefty. You could always put the old ones back on when (if) you ever sell it...

Yeah. I particularly like the part of the ad where the seller claims: "financial concerns mean I can only keep one bass" (and obviously require a starting price higher than the price Dela quoted above). What's next? "It was only driven to and from church on Sundays by a little old lady"?

How disillusioning!

that person is doubling his money,or maybe tripling it, depending on the final bid,he only got it for 1,800,that's a smart move,it's going to sell very quick!,,because old alembics dont pop up often & to this day i still hav'nt seen one older than mine(#12)ever.

Hey gossiping fishwives! The start price reflects the knock I will take on exchange rates when the (probably) American buyer pays for it, and any profits made will be split fair and square between myself and Michael who sold me the bass. Not that it is any of your business, anyway! If I WAS the kind of person who hunted the net for good value basses then resold them for profit on Ebay, what would that make me? A capitalist, an entrepreneur: the type of person your country wants everyone to be! So cut the crap and save the disillusionment for your vote in the next election. :o) There is nothing untrue or misleading in the description, and I really can only afford one bass at a time. It is always a risk buying a bass without seeing/playing it, and in this case it just doesn't feel right and I can't play my best on it. Therefore rather than pay to convert it to UK power supply, ect, it is easier for me to resell it now and look for another bass. Hope that suits you all!

My father emigrated to Canada from central Europe and he was very fond of that expression. He told me that the English version (Fishwife) appeared to be translated verbatim from his mother tongue, so he was comfortable using the expression in English. I will not describe here what it meant (to him/me), as it may offend some readers with it's political incorrectness, but I love the sound of it, and hadn't heard it for a while; thanks for the chuckle.

Hi Paul, good of you to join us, your business is your own. Interstate 10 is an interesting name for a British band. Did some or all of you live in the US at any time?

I've heard the expression Fishwife most of my life. The definition I know is someone who talks loud and constantly, kinda screetchy and annoying. I think it comes from old open air markets or maybe roving carts where the person would holler out their wares. Like the song Molly Malone. That doesn't sound like Ellery's definition.

Hi Paul:

I have been accused more than once of gossiping (in the case at hand, correctly, I regret to say). But a fishwife!! That's new and I won't venture whether it's accurate.

Touche' I'm redfaced and have shot my mouth off publicly without accurate information. Apologies to you and to Michael for my intrusion. Your business is indeed your own.

I'm afraid I incorrectly assumed that Michael had let go of a magnificent instrument for a very reasonable price - only to have someone use the oldest Ebay advertising gimmic in what I assumed was a disingenuous manner to turn Michael's loss into his gain. Though I am a capitalist, Ebay trader and reseller, I do root for the home team if (think) I see someone I know and respect appear to get the short end of a deal. Apparently, I was wrong on all counts. Again, my apologies to Michael and to you.

Now, as to saving my disillusionment for the next election: My only disillusionment is that John Kerry is the best the Democrats could come up with!!

Whew! Did I really say all that? How 'bout just, "Whoops, sorry guys"?

Welcome back Paul. It would be nice to see you around this group.

Oh ...huh ...her comes professor dr Paul the bad one,

the expression "Fishwife" aka "talking as fishwifes" "gossiping as fishwifes" is a standing expression as well in Flemish, I think the Netherlands as in UK.

It goes back to the time that in harbours the man did the fishing and the wifes of the fisherman went out to sell the fish. In this ages there was NO WAY to have a freezer or ice to carry along. So if you went out to sell your fish it had to be done VERY quick!! The quickest way to sell the fish was talking, clamping people in the street and try to sell your fish. "Talking as "fishwifes" means ...talk a lot. It is not necessarly "gossiping" but means "a lot of talking" about nothing much.

Also yelling, hard, long when you walk the streets would do the trick. So having "a voice as a fishwife" means a HARD, HARSH and LOUD voice.
Thank you for your attention

Paul the bad one

BTW: if you ever wondered where the tradition comes from to add drops of fresh lemon-juice with fish?
The former story indicates that it coudl take some time before the fish was sold. So to mask the oh ...huh ....lesser good taste of the too far gone fish you add ... right!

Thank you for your welcomes and I am glad all misunderstandings are settled and my use of 'fishwife' provided fun and discussion lol! I was not dissing Americans or your culture except as part of my defense strategy - i am roundly known as an Americophile, and in answer to the Interstate 10 question my wife is from Santa Monica, and i love the fact you have a road that stretches from one pier on one ocean all the way to another harbour on the other ocean!

Ahh, that explains that. I'm at the opposite end of I-10 in Jacksonville, Fl. It stops a few miles short of the ocean on this end.
