Hey folks, Just wanted to get the word out that I am in the market for a 5-string fretless. I'm open to any Alembic model or year, and cosmetic condition is not my top priority. Anyone got anything fretless looking for a new home? Adam |

Thanks for the tip, but I've checked eBay about every day for the last year or so :-). I really don't trust most eBay sellers purely because the opportunity to 'leave out some details' tends to leave the buyer stuck paying repair bills or having less-than-pristine instruments. My Distillate had its original output jack violently ripped out such that a small chunk of wood is missing along the control cavity. The replacement jack was sloppily epoxied into place. Neither of these problems were mentioned in the eBay listing, nor were they visible in the posted pictures. Imagine my dismay when my bass arrived with a hole in it, and with some hardened gray goop all around the new jack! The price seemed very good, but it turned out to be too good to be true! I was hoping my post here would lead me to finding someone who respects their instrument and wants to find it a good home. Adam |

Not sure you if you are including new basses in your search, but I just posted a nice Macassar Ebony Excel 5-string fretless in our online store. |

Mica, Stunning bass! I read the specs at the on-line store, but they don't mention what the toggle switch is for. Q-Switch on a fretless? Active/Passive? Ellery (Lowlife) |

It's the on/off switch for the LEDs. I'll add it to the spec list. |

Mica, That bass is absolutely gorgeous! Macassar ebony is my favorite wood, and that piece looks like it grew just to be made into a bass. That is quite a bit out of my current price range, but I am not ruling it out. If I can manage to hit the lottery or find a bag of money on the street, I know just what to do. Maybe that is a "list" price and you would have to arrange an actual price with the dealer of your choice? If that's the case, you might be able to get the bass for significantly less than what is posted. |

I have been pursuing a 2nd hand fretless for about a year now as well. If you are OK with a 34" scale get any 2nd hand Alembic (worn frets make for a cheap price), have a good luthier replace the fingerboard and voila :-) This gives you have a huge range to choose from... and Mica and Val don't seem to mind the idea -- assuming they approve of the Luthier!!! BTW my quote for a new Ebony fingerboard was for about $400. See thread below for previous discussion: http://alembic.com/club/messages/402/8831.html Kind Regards, Sean. |

I had a chance to see the Excel mentioned by Mica above - didn't actually play it, but it looks even better in person, and the blue LEDs are 'really cool'. I'm not really in the market, but it was quite tempting nonetheless. |
