Ed Roman guitars just posted a beautiful 5 string Buckeye Burl, Series 1 triple omega on Ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4713&item=3721193196&rd=1) . The starting bid is $17,500. I just went on the custom quote generator and entered all the specs for the bass listed on Roman's website and I get a retail price for the bass of $17,995. What am I missing here? $495? A 10% discount would be $1,800! I couldn't resist asking and emailed the seller to ask if they have the price right. Bill | ||

I spoke to Ed in December of last year regarding this very guitar, and he mentioned to me a list price of $24,000 or $25,000, and he would let it go for, if I remember correctly, about $16,500. At the time, I did not check the quote generator, as I as a little blown away at the enormity of the deal, but if the list is indeed that, then $16K or $17K is a fair price. Without doubt, and with all due respect to everyone here, quite possibly the finest instrument to ever come out of Santa Rosa. Well, OK, top 5 at least..... | ||

I just hit the quote generator and come out around $19K, plus or minus. If he bought the bass with the right monthly sale going on, it could easily be $1500 lower than that. Maybe I'm missing something, but it looks like another bass that he has on eBay with a starting bid awfully close to the list price. | ||

Hey gang, Don't mean to gloat, but I live in Salt Lake City so that puts me a mere 446 miles from Ed Romans and on a trip to Las Vegas last year I had the great good fortune to spend about an hour with this very bass all to myself...well almost to myself.It was hard to get Ed to leave me in peace for any length of time! If you think the pictures are impressive,well.....let me just say that this bass is unbelievably, breathtakingly beautiful. I could just stare at the wood for hours. In fact I do. It is the wall paper on my computer! Alembic has done their usual fantastic job of wood working and finish. The manner in which they inlayed bark into the inclusions in the buckeye was marvelous. It is the most impressive Alembic(or any Bass) I have ever seen. Playing wise, I had never played an Alembic five before and I was immediately impressed that this wide neck had the same amazing playablilty as any other 4 string Alembic! It was a total joy to play. Not the least bit bulky like some fives. To me they have a certain something about their necks that is hard to put into words but they just feel soooooooooooooo good! Am I gushing enough? Good! I'm not done yet! Ed plugged me into a Ashdown stack and cranked it up alomst too loud fo my taste. I had him turn it down. I just wanted to get intimate with the tone of the bass if you know what I mean? Let me tell ya, Mica does not exagerate about the Ebony neck laminates. This baby had incredible balls and sustain with what I would call kind of a "smokey" finger tone. Not the super deep tone that some 5's produce(althought it was certainly capable of that) but just what I would describe as alot of "drive". Every note you played had such authority,I guess is the best way to put it.The harmonics were so clear and sparkly and they sustained as if the signal was run through a compressor with a long release time. They just kept ringing ,even on the second fret! Amazing! Yet in an instant you could dial up a nice tight dry Jaco tone. Gotta love those series II filters!!! Anyway,I'm finally getting around to the reason for my post. I saw the tag on this bass. It listed all the options and then the list price which as best I can recall was right around $16,300. I saw this bass at his store last October which means he could easily have ordered it before the price increase...Hmmm. |
