I’m getting ready to “pull the trigger” so I thought it was time to introduce myself. I’m a lefty from New Jersey (yeah, I hear the snickering – but we lefties just view ourselves as right brained, and we from New Jersey just respond “so – you got a problem with that?”).
I only started playing a couple of years ago. I was taking my son to drum lessons and playing bass was something I always wanted to do, so I took lessons while waiting for him. And here I am, he quit and I kept going. I’m now ready to treat myself to a piece of art that I’m going to enjoy playing.
I really like the small body’s symmetry and I’ve got small hands (now you’re really snickering – “is he tone deaf too?”) so I’m thinking BB or SC. I’ve gotten a lot of great info from other threads, but I’ve still got some questions. I’m going to post under “Dreaming…for now”. Any responses or directions to threads I’ve missed that answer my questions would be appreciated.

Hi Ed, welcome to the Club! I have a SCSD & like you was also considering a BB because I too like the symmetrical small body shape. My plan was to play both basses & decide which one I wanted, but a funny thing happened on the way to fulfil my plans. I talked to Beaver Felton at Bass Central & told him my plan & that I was going to drive to Austin the next week to try them out because there are no Alembic dealers in Houston. He told me that if I wanted a SCSD that he had one being built & would ship it directly to me from Alembic. I liked that idea so I told him to check with Alembic to see when it was going to be completed because I didn't want to wait several months to get one. He called me back in a hour & said it was due to be shipped that day! He told Alembic about me & they agreed to hold the bass for a week until I could try both basses & decide if I wanted the SCSD they had just completed. This was on Thursday, on Friday Mica sent Beaver pictures of the bass & he sent them to me & after drooling over them over the weekend I called Beaver on Monday & told him I wanted the SCSD without even playing it or the BB! I got the bass & couldn't be more happy with it! I eventually did make the trip to Austin & played the BB & that confirmed that I made to right choice. The BB has more of a "woody" midrange tone whereas the SCSD sounds almost piano like with the filters wide open. The range of tone on the SCSD is incredible! I think you would be happy with either bass, both basses played great but their is a definite difference in the tone & finish.

I documented my experience getting my SCSD here - http://alembic.com/club/messages/411/97845.html?1306382779

Good luck in your search!

Hi Rusty,
Thanks for your passing on your experience. It makes me think – get what you love, and love what you get.
Regards
Ed
Ps. Your SCSD is “stop in your tracks and say…whoa” gorgeous

Hi Ed, My wife also fell in love with the pictures of the SCSD Mica sent to Beaver & she encouraged me to get it even though it was $1000 more. She shared your sentiment that if I was going to pay that much for a bass that I should get exactly what I wanted, don't settle! Although, with Alembic, you are never "settling" every instrument they make is a work of art, but there is personal preference. The pictures do not even come close to doing these basses justice, if you buy one based on a picture as I did, you will be blown away when you get the real thing! I was literally speechless when I opened the case & saw mine for the first time!

Hi Ed - welcome.

IMO, you've made a wise choice for a first Alembic. SCSD or BB are both very comfortable and user-friendly to play. Either way you go, you won't be sorry.

Once you've made THAT choice, your biggest problem will be deciding what your NEXT Alembic will be...

David is right Ed, Alembics are very addictive like tattoos! Once you get your first one, you want more!
