Hi everyone. My name is Charles and I am a high school English teacher in a little town in central Georgia. I started playing guitar in garage bands back in 1983. I wanted a bass but the guy at the music store told me I was too small (8th grade-I was 4'10" and about 85 pounds) and so I ended up with a guitar instead. After I graduated from Auburn University in 1992 and got a job, the first thing I did was buy a bass and amp, and less than a month later met some guys and put together a Dead cover band. In 1995 I went on the road with a regional act called Acoustic Workshop for a few years, then a country band for a couple more. I became a dad in 2000 so I got off the road and started teaching- much better money (how many people can say that?)! Currently I play mostly for fun with a couple of different groups. I have been playing a Modulus Q5 for about 10 years now, with a G&L SB-2 for the 4 string option. The Modulus still sounds great, but the neck is starting to act up, so I have decided to have Alembic build a bass for me. I have been discussing possibilities with Val and Susan, so hopefully we can get the ball rolling before the New Year. I look forward to being a member of this fine community of bottom-dwellers, and thanks for taking the time to read this far ;-). Charles |

Hi Charles and welcome to the club. If you're ordering a new Alembic, get the order in before the new year otherwise you'll be subject to the Imminent price hike. Graeme |

Welcome Charles - I think you'll find a very nice group of folks post here - not all of us are "bottom-dwellers," though, there is a small but growing group of guitar pluckers hanging here too. I look forward to seeing what you and Alembic are cooking up. Tom |

Welcome, Georgia-boy! (I was born in Fort Benning). It's an exciting thing (obvious understatement) and good timing -before the price increase. Just remember, they can do virtually anything, so think through what you want carefully. There are some extremely knowledgable -and helpful- people here, so if you have any questions, ask, and people will answer. If there is anything you don't know and should know, ask... this is a great resource. Make it a point to get ALL the details clear... about what you want. To say that your options are extensive would be quite an understatement. If this is your first custom, I'd recommend REALLY figuring out EXACTLY what would be PERFECT for you... in every way, every last detail... and then figuring out your priorities, so that in the event you can't get everything you want, you get the most important/essential thing(s). If you haven't already, dig around, and check out what other people have got on the CUSTOM ARCHIVES; you'll see a lot of good ideas, maybe something that'll grab you, maybe somebody has already done something like you want, and can give you feedback to help your decision-making processes. Best wishes with your project, I look forward to seeing it! |

Charles, Welcome! And thanks in advance for being a teacher. You have a bigger impact than a lot of people realize, and you have my gratitude for educating the future of America. I've got a custom in the works as well - a replica John Entwistle type Exploiter. It's going to be fairly exact (with a few differences - John's not playing it, I am!), and the bass of my dreams. That's what Alembic's all about, IMHO ... fulfilling your bass dreams. I can't wait to get it. It's even going to have the note inlays on the fingerboard, most likely done by the same individual who did John's! I've spent time at Fort Benning. First, for Airborne School. Then for the Officer Basic Course, then the Officer Advanced Course (Infantry, that is), so I'm familiar with Georgia. It's a beautiful state, BTW. It's not Ohio, but it's OK! ;-) Again, welcome to the club, and I hope you get the bass of your dreams. Best regards, Alan |

Hello Charles, the new custom bass sounds exciting. Glad to have you on board. The guitar guys are creeping up on us in numbers. I'm not sure where Roberta is. My company has a facility in Commerce and I love it up there. Beautiful country and one can get a decent pint in Athens. Sam |

Hello Charles (and a belated hello to Simon as well). Congrats on your pending order, I'll be looking for your FTC thread when your order gets rolling. The drummer in one of my bands is a grade school music teacher here in Illinois. Keep following your muse! Mike |

Wow! Thanks for the warm welcome, guys. I appreciate everyone's comments, encouragement, and advice. I have been lurking around the website for over a year, and the forum for a couple of months. I've been an Alembic admirer for years, though. It started when I saw the Spoiler one of my bandmate's roommate had. I was just starting out and he could play the heck out of it...I was just blown away. A couple of years later I had just bought a '73 P-bass for 600.00, and it was minty as heck, too. About 2 weeks later I was up in Nashville and saw a brand new walnut topped Europa for 1450. (1993) I could have traded the P-bass and maxxed out my credit card for the other 700 ( Nashville was getting Fender-crazy then). One of the worst decisions I ever made. I didn't have the OHSC with me and didn't want to have to make another trip from Macon. Stupid. Sam, Roberta is about 25 miles west of Macon on Hwy. 80 towards Columbus. Thanks for the kind words, Alan. I put up a general description of the features I'm thinking about on the dreaming page...let me know what you think. Charles |

Wow, Roberta, Macon, that's a NICE part of Georgia, cragston. Good to have you here. If you've been talking to Val and Susan, then no need to tell you how accomodating ALEMBIC is. And you're among like minded souls here, so ya got it made. I'm in the Nashville area, so it's good to have more of us Southern guys around. He's right: It AIN'T Ohio ! ! J o e y |
