I’m awaiting arrival of my used Orion 5-string I purchased on (yes I know) eBay. I may have gotten the deal of the century as I paid a fraction of the going price. Or a may have been had. I’ll know on Wednesday 2/15/2006 when she arrives. I’m in Marin, so I may slide up to the showroom and get my new baby a set of new strings, as an offering to the bass Gods. I’ve been playing for since 1968 and teaching since 1972. I have a wonderful 4 string made by Real Guitars in SF. It is the 1st bass Dan Ransom and Rick Turner made together. It is a Jazz w/ Bartolini soap bars. It has incredible tone, and every soundman complements it during sound checks. But I need a five-string. I do! I’ve tuned down to D and C in order to play the flippin’ lines the keyboard players write! C was a drag, but I got used to D. So I’ve been drooling over a Modulus Q5 I borrowed from a friend, and I explored getting my own. 3k! Found a nice one at a local store, and almost bought it. Something was not right. So I’m surfing this Alembic web site and now the drool is a constant foam (Rabid Bassist will be my next album) as I revisit all the basses Alembic makes. So last week I’m surfing eBay and find a plain, no-frills Alembic Orion 5-string, and bidding is at $1500.00. I call my wife, but I knew what she’d say. My wife is not typical. She tells me to “Get it! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime bass, and you deserve it.” I bid mo money and win the bass. Ever since I’ve been walking around in circles muttering something about “I can’t believe I’m getting an Alembic!” The Bruski |

Bruce- Congratulations on the Orion- and no you haven't been had. The bass is coming from a salesman at Hames Music in Gaffney, SC. He was selling it for a customer who bought it new there about 4 years ago. I bid on the bass, but didn't know how high it would go so, You got a great deal on a great bass.Enjoy. Mike P.S. I've already gotten 3 second chance offers on this bass that you bought. |

Bruce: Welcome to Alembicland! I just checked out your new bass on eBay. I love the flame maple. I can empathize with you at the momemt. I bought a 1976 Series 1 guitar of off eBay last week. (I've wanted one of these for more than 30 years!) It is scheduled to get here tomorrow. The hours can't pass fast enough. You should definitely take your bass up to Santa Rosa (a little off the Hearn Ave. exit on 101). They'll register it in your name, provide build and history info, and make you feel right at home. I bought my first Alembic ('83 Electrum) in the summer of 2004. The folks at Alembic treated me as if I had just dropped $20,000 on a brand new custom! I have NEVER encountered customer support like you'll get from Alembic. Enjoy your new bass, and remember to breath every once in a while until wednesday. Bill, the guitar one |

There was a nice Series I - maybe a '76 - that I was going to bid on last year. To minimize all of the shipping back and forth, I asked if the seller would send it to Alembic instead of my house so I could give it the deluxe wash. He refused. I found that very irritating and didn't bid on the guitar. I hate when people refuse to be accomodating on ebay. I sold an Ibanez JEM two years ago on ebay to a mom who was buying it for her son's birthday. I overnighted it to her at no extra charge so he could open it on his birthday instead of 2 days later. |

Bruski, welcome to the club. Did you get her yet? Photo's? Nice collection you got going. Tell the lovely bride that with that attitude, she will never get into the ex-wives club. She got any sisters? Bruski, cool name, somehow reminds me of college. Enjoy the new toy! |

Gary et al. I did get her. See her in the showcase Orion section. Yeah my wife's a keeper, no sisters. Actually I'm not much of a drinker. Bruski is from my name BRUce GapinSKI. I love the instrument. I took it by the shop last week. Mica and Valentino looked at her and gave me the OK. |
