Hello Alembicians -

My name is Von Babasin and I am a working bassist in the Studio City area, a 20+ year affiliated composer with BMI, a 10+ year member of Musician's Local #47, a voting member of NARAS, and I'm an advisor on the board of directors of Los Angeles Music Week. I have an extensive background in all aspects of film and video production and direction as well. I am also the son of one of the most innovative and creative jazz bassist-producers in Hollywood, Harry Babasin, who made his most significant marks in the forties and fifties.

I have been accepted for fiscal sponsorship by the New York Foundation for the Arts to produce a documentary film about my father's life and his contributions to west coast jazz history. "Harry Babasin's Jazz In Hollywood" is a sponsored project of The New York Foundation for The Arts (NYFA). NYFA is a 501(c)3, tax exempt organization founded in 1971 to work with the arts community to develop and facilitate programs in all disciplines. NYFA will receive grants on behalf of "Harry Babasin's Jazz In Hollywood", ensure the use of grant funds in accordance with the grant agreements, and will provide program or financial reports as required.

This film will be a concise history of an influential force in the west coast jazz movement and bring recognition to an artform that it so richly deserves, as well as provide an educational resource for generations to come. I am still in the grant writing stage to raise the funds for the production - I have written to more than 400 foundations that support arts and culture.

Robert Wilonsky, pop culture writer for the Dallas Observer, wrote in an article about Harry, "Harry Babasin played with the famous and beloved. He was their peer, their bandmate, their friend." He was, indeed, and he deserves this film as much as the world deserves to know of his passion and creativity.

If any of this inspires you in any way, feel free to contact me.

Thank you for your time,

Von Babasin

Hi Rich - Hi 8StringKing - Hi Dave - nice to meet you.

Pictures, eh? Here's one fairly famous pic of my dad playing with Charlie Parker and Chet Baker in 1952 -

Harry Babasin with Charlie Parker and Chet Baker, 1952

It's been reproduced many times - I have an archive of literally thousands of pics along with over 500 hours of analog tape jazz masters spanning four decades - I'm working toward building a west coast jazz museum.

Welcome Von. Thats an impressive resume you have.

I've known Robert Wilonksy since he was a kid. I worked for his father for over 18 years.

Hello Olieoliver - thanks for your kind words...

Robert Wilonsky was very gracious when I spoke with him. It's been a few years now, though he still has the story posted on the Observer website. Since my father was born in Dallas, he took an interest in the story. Harry was raised in Vernon, Texas and went to college at North Texas State with the likes of Herb Ellis and Jimmy Giuffre. One of the early One O'Clock Jumpers...
