... my first alembic is on it's way to me (hopefully not longer than a week). it's a 1994 europa 5 string w/ 15.5mm spacing at the bridge, coco bolo top, and red leds!

still would like to get my hands on a 5st series, but this should keep me satisfied for a while.

btw - i'm in CT.

Very Nice indeed!
Maybe you could get it converted to a series?

Three things...

1. Nice lookin' bass!

2. I think it's Bocate, but will have to check the file to confirm.

3. Sorry (chalie), this bass isn't thick enough to convert to Series.

emailed the seller, and in fact it is a bocate top. nice catch. based on a quick search, a lot of people confuse bocate for cocobolo. will post a serial number / build request. separately.

You are gonna enjoy that bass, I have one just the same and it's a great instrument fairly heavy but not uncomfortable and balances perfectly.

I see this is your first Alembic too what a great introduction to the alembic family sound.

thanks all for the warm welcome. i just got my europa yesterday. sounds awesome. one thing i noticed vs other basses i've played is the lack of body vibration. strike a string on another bass, and i can feel the whole body vibrate. the alembic, however, is steady as a rock. i guess that means the energy is kept within the strings and does not dissipate through the body - probably a function of the neck-through design and the strong purpleheart laminates. another thing - it sounded like an alembic before i even plugged it in.

Congrats Greg on the Europa! I have an '02 6 string with quilt maple top. It has a wide neck with eleven maple purpleheart lams! I can definitely feel the bass through my whole upper body! You will need some time to understand the electronics fully. The Europa has a lot of great sounding combinations, but most powerful are the bass and treble 3 way switches. The middle position is flat, switched up is a cut, and switched down is a boost. I think someone told me it is a 6 db change in each position. You will find out soon enough that thoses two switches can raise the bar on outstanding sounds. Combined with the classic Alembic low-pass filter and pickup blend, you'll be finding new sounds for a long time! Hope you have an extended range cabinet that can handle the low end - it's awesome! I got my Europa at G-Guitars in New Haven, and I too am in CT.

it's been about a year and a half now, and i've got everything dialed in pretty nicely. love the europa at gigs. putting it through a kern preamp, sf2 in the tube f/x loop - here's a recent soundboard recording of my band i wanted to show off. we just got the presonus studiolive.

hey rusty... not sure why it's not working... it should just download an mp3 from archive.org. but you can go to the player and play "hard to handle" or really any tune from the gig here...

That one works! Great sound on the Europa! That's a nice arrangement of Hard To Handle too!

thanks rusty... loving the tone. that arrangement is loosely based the dead's early 70s (pigpen) versions.
