I have tried looking through the archives, but have found little.

Have many Alembic guitars been built with wider than "normal" and fat (say 0.9 or so at the nut) necks?

My 77-648 has a 1.75 wide neck which is probably a little wider than normal. Is there any chance of an older series I showing up with a 1 7/8" neck? How about a Tribute, Darling, or Further?

Is wanting this wide a neck a symptom of a custom build in my future?

Todd.

Todd:

My first Alembic was an Electrum. I loved it, except for the neck being too narrow. My '76 Series 1 seems to have a wider neck. Maybe I'll take its measure tonight. It was also more of a "D" shape than a "C" shape, which I didn't care for. I brought it back to the mothership and had the neck reshaped into more of a "C". I must admit it was more than a little disconcerting to watch Bob vise my guitar down and start planing wood away! When I had my custom Further built, I brought my old Strat up to Santa Rosa and had them copy the neck profile. It came out great.

My custom "Plum Pudding" has the a really wide neck. It must be almost 2". It is also ridiculously thin. Fun to play!

Would it be reasonable to price out having the neck removed from my Tribute and replaced with a 1 7/8" wide neck. It seems to me that this might be very expensive. I know some people have had their necks shaved down. Has anyone gone the other way and had a small neck replaced with a bigger one.

Yikes! That's really not a fun option. Not only do you have the cost of refinishing, but the new neck, inlays, inlaid logo, LEDs if you have them or want them, etc, really don't make it a good value at all, as it could approach the $4K mark really fast depending on the features.

If you absolutely love the top, or if the guitar had some certain sentimental value it might be worth it. Otherwise, it might be better to find this one a new home and have something made from the start that had exactly the specs you wanted.
