I was thinking of Lesh's quad setup after watching The GD movie..... figured I'd throw this idea out there:

Since the Godfather & Osage basses were constructed, we've seen the introduction and acceptance of extended range basses. But, to my knowledge, the pup-per-string matrix is not of much use lately unless you are in the Roland/Yamaha/Axion synth realm....

Along the same lines, 5.1 surround has become a popular/accepted medium of late, yet most mixes out there aren't using the format "as an instrument" or to it's full potential....

This got me thinking about a sexophonic pickup (on a 6 string bass or guitar) paired to a 6 channel interface/matrix. BUT... In this matrix not only could each string be assigned to it's own output~ also have 6 bandpass filters which could allow for a very discrete range of the audio spectrum to be passed to each speaker (regardless of string source).

Practical? no. Possible? lol.....
