Well, since we're dreaming here,I guess I might as well share what's been cooking in my head... Starting with a Europa foundation, but with an Exploiter body and AXY pickups positioned in the same harmonic sweet spots as a 60s Thunderbird. Mahogany neck with 2 purpleheart laminates, 21 fret fingerboard with the neck set further into the body so the 21st fret lines up where the 24th would be on a normal Exploiter, narrow bridge, blue side LEDs, pointy cone headstock with purpleheart laminate front, mahogany laminate rear, purpleheart top on body, gloss finish except for the back of the neck, AND I think that covers it! |

I like your idea for the neck. I've got two Signature Deluxes. One is a shorty SC and the other a custom 32. The custom has a maple, purpleheart, ebony neck sandwich and a relative bright sound. The SC has a mahogany neck with 2 purpleheart and 1 birch laminate similar to what you have described. That bass has a more mellow sound than the custom and is perfect for the blues. I can get my other bass to sound similar but it requires a LOT more tweaking with the SF-2 Superfilter to get the sound I want for the blues pieces we do. |

I like the idea of having the neck set further in to the body - wonder if any have been made like that? |

Have you checked the Custom Archive section of the Featured Custom page? A few years back saw the arrival of the Alembird. |

Oh yeah, I remember the Alembird. Very similar to my thoughts! Just need to delete the top 3 frets. I'm mostly a Rickenbacker and Gibson guy, and even though Rics are all maple, I really like the qualities of mahogany. It seems Alembics have plenty of high end, so I don't think the lack of maple would bother me. Plus, my Les Paul is all mahogany with an ebony board and T-bird pickups, and that thing kills! Plenty of crunch. |
