I'm currently down to 2 Alembics and someone has a real hard-on for my MK... thus, it may soon be gone. I'm a couple months away from paying my house off and I will then be debt-free. I'm considering rewarding myself with what I hope would be the ultimate bass (for me). Here is what I've learned from my Alembics past and present: Spoiler: LOVED the body shape, 32" scale, and it balanced nicely. However, the electronics were not very flexible. Standard Point SI: LOVED the body shape and the tones were just otherworldly. However, the ergonomics were terrible and those tones were negated by the time it went through a crappy soundman and a crappier PA. SC Standard: I still have this guy. I like the short scale and it was my introduction to Signature electronics. The ergonomics are problematic. Brown Bass: I liked the short scale and the balance was better than on my SC, but I was not a fan of the general tone of this bass or the Anniversary electronics. Orion: Because of its “Fender-ish” body design, this was a comfortable bass to play. However, the Epic electronics didn’t have that Alembic “zing”. MK (BalK) Deluxe 5: I REALLY didn’t get along with this guy. The neck was WAYYY too wide and the bass was too heavy. MK (BalK) Standard: I still have this one and I love most everything about it. If I were to spec-out a new build, this would be my template. So here goes…. MIKE’S PERFECT BASS BalK Standard (5 string): Ash body with a Maple top and Purpleheart veneer. 7 piece neck: Maple/PH/Maple/Ebony/Maple/PH/Maple with a Knobby headstock. 1.75” nut at the most (has anyone ever seen a nut smaller than this on a 5-string?). Signature electronics with a FatBoy in the bridge position and an AXY in the neck. Here’s where it might get interesting: I don’t want any points or omega cut outs. I want to move the bridge so that the bass is no longer than a typical Fender/MM. I want to move the bridge PUP to the MM “sweet spot”. I only want 22 frets (to give me a little more room between the neck PUP and the FB. |
