well a lot of you know i headed out to see susan and the gang last week to celebrate the direwolf being made cotm.
HOW COULD I TOP THE WOLF??????
WELL.......
susan has been kind enough to produce the first alembic tribute body bass for me. There will be some design changes to make the balance better, but its a done deal
here are the specs so far
medium scale
neck through
neck- maple-purple-vermillion-ebony-vermillion-purple-maple
body- maple/verm/maple/coco
bookmatch to center top only
coco pickup covers
side led's- red and amber at the 5th,12, and 24th
fat boy at the bridge
mark king elec with a bass boost swtich
abalone inlays
ebony peghead
gold logo
crown headstock
gold tuners and strap locks
continous backplates
wood truss cover
"scarlet" inlay at the 24th fret and completion on the 25th
it will not have the classic carved top- but if you look at a classico bass, we are going to put that carving around the perimeter to give it the "feel" and thats just fine for me. its actually less expensive as i dont have to get a thicker tribute top wood and since i was there?
well i picked the top wood
i am so psyched and honored.....

Sounds really exciting Jeff. What's the betting we'll be seeing your name on another COTM in a year or so ;-)
The neck laminations sound really special. Was there a particular 'sonic' reason for them?

Yup, the very one he used circa '80-'81. I saw Phil use that bass many times, the most memorable of which was at the Radio City Music Hall gigs that was documented on "Reckoning" and "Dead Set".

almost guys.... the upper horn will extend to the 17th fret app and the lower will be a bit longer too, the body will be adjusted to look like the tribute...symetrically speaking,,,,
susan will post drawings down the road.

its all good- bass central will be handling this one for me.
hey thanks for the headsup kevin- i havent looked at the radio city shows in a while. damn i was at all those shows- even slept outy overnight in front of st patricks cathedral..

hey there graem- thanks bud... would be nice,
to answer the question.

maple tends to be bright.. since we have the maple body and neck,,,
and we have maple/ vermillion body lams
aesthetcially i liked the idea of the vermillion running through the bass.and the purple/orange/black- i like the sound of that

musically i am hoping that the vermillion in the neck will soften the highesa touch, increase mids a little and the ebony will increase sustain-
adding the bass boost switch gives me some more flexiblity,,,,

Is this another 5 string, Jeff? How do you tune your 32" 5 string Wolf?

Kevin / Jimmy.
If you go on www.gdstore.com and page down through the stickers, there's one of jerry sitting playing acoustic. to his right you can just see that irwin bass being weilded by Phil.

jeff - sorry for the brief hijack.

Yup, good call, Graeme. It looks like that's from one of the Warfield and/or Radio City dates. If I'm not mistaken, I don't think Jerry played acoustic any other time during that period in time. That bass had the double "P-bass" pickup set-up on it, possibly DiMarzio's.
