Hi everybody,

One of my first guitars that I still own is a Yamaha TRB-4P (MIJ) with piezo bridge. I had Master Luthier, Miles Jones of Fretworks (now retired) dial in the neck-work. In terms of playability, it is perfect.

It sounds?...unique.

I've always wanted to upgrade the electronics to something more versatile and sonically rich. After playing a 2010's-era Essence I was deeply impressed (it smashed my FBass BN5 custom on every level). I am considering the PJ Activators but I'm not certain whether they will work with the existing TRB routing and layout. I'm also hoping to retain and integrate the existing bridge piezos into the final signal chain; and perhaps the piezo switch could be changed over to a 3-way Q-switch (Q on/off, and piezo injection?).

I'm a technical dilettante (that's putting it generously) and really don't know where to begin. I'm not sure whether this sort of mod is viable or even a good idea - will it get me anywhere close to the Essence, MXY sound?

I would appreciate getting some opinions on how to proceed.

Many thanks,

- JW
