What I have in mind is a 5 string MK Deluxe with the Europa boost/cut switches and a mahogany/purpleheart/ebony/purpleheart/ebony/purpleheart/mahogany neck. The tuners and hardware will be black chrome, the fingerboard ovals black Tahitian MOP, and the cloud in the logo will be black Tahitian MOP as well. I've picked out "Red" in the Cocobolo section of the wood bank for the top, and Val has reccommended an ash body. The back will probably be Cocobolo too, with continuous wood backplates. As for body shape, I am torn between a Balance K with no omega or point and the Valentino II body shape. The V-2 is gorgeous, but a little flashy for me, and it might miss some of the good grain on that top wood. On the other hand, the balance might be a little better with the bridge sitting as low on the body as it does, plus the idea of maybe getting the first five string of that body style is tempting. Susan is also working on a dragonfly inlay for me, and I'm not sure where it would go on the V-2. I also can't decide if I should bookmatch to center, or if the neck should be visible from the front as well.
I've been playing a Modulus Q5 for the past 10 years or so and like the scale length, but I do have small hands, so I'm thinking 34" for this one. 32" might be nice, but I am worried about not having enough resistance to get the right punch and feel with my plucking fingers. With my skinny little fingers I like to almost push down on the string and let the note "pop" out. It's hard to describe, but when I do it right it takes very little effort to yield a nice crisp and punchy but warm sound. As far as neck dimensions, I am planning a trip to bass central to test drive some of the various configurations, but I am thinking that the narrow nut of the "comfort" neck combined with the narrow bridge of the "classic" might be just right. Also, does anyone know if the depth (fingerboard to back) of my Modulus Q5 neck can be duplicated without compromising stability on a wood neck? Let me know what y'all think,
Charles
