I just bought an alembic Orion 5 and it came with the alembic strings, I'm wondering what other brands of strings would other players suggest. I play funky rock, blues and a little jazz.Any feedback on Elixers or Thomastik-infeld powerbass strings? Hi Frank; there have been quite a few threads on the subject of strings. A few are shown in this post from the Must Reads section. |

I have tried a set of Thomastiks( I believe nickel over steel core) & I was'nt that impressed.I love stainless steel roundwounds though, they simply give me what I like. But the Thomastiks did maintain what tone and level of brightness they do have. I have to change my strings every 3 shows, so for the abuse that I give my strings these did hold up for how long I needed them to. I use Dean Markley SR2000 (the Will Lee set)taper core strings. They are stainless steel, intonate quickly & easily and sound great! |

It seems that alot of people are fans of the Alembic strings, I got my Orion 5 used and they still had the alembic string on them so I dont know how a fresh set sound. I live in Canada and the only way to get a set of alembics is online. Is it worth the cost plus delivery? I know Elixers make sweet guitar strings and am still wondering, are they any good for bass? 2400wattman- what style of music are you playing on the dean Markley SR2000? dO they have a wrap on the ends? Does anyone know what kind of strings Phil Lesh uses? Just Curious. Thanks for the help, Frank (Message edited by frank on December 14, 2005) |

Hello Frank, I'm in a Led Zeppelin Tribute band called Zoso. There are yellow silk ends on the wrap end of the string, they are the taper core type where the core of the string rests on the bridge. If you play with a heavy hand or pick, they are surprisingly strong and can take a fair amount of abuse(typical of regular strings). Also they are slightly heavier than a regular set- .47,.67,.87,1.07. |

Thanks wattman, I like the looks of the silk wrap, but I don't play to heavy. I prefer slightly lighter strings but there are so many options that I'm just lost. Any suggestions? Has anyone tried ernie ball? |

D'Addario's XL'S are very nice. They are smooth to the touch, have a good amount of life to them, and they are consistent from pack to pack. (no dead strings!). The Ernie Ball's that I tried were the hybrid slinky type, and they sounded dead to me. DR's are also great strings. If you are on a budget(who is'nt)try to find Bass Blasters made by Dean Markley. Before I got an endorsement w/them I bought these whenever I could. I mean if a store had ten packs, I bought them all since they were about $20.00 a pack and they had TWO SETS of strings per pack and they sounded pretty damn good. Incidently I just bought a used Distillate and there was a set of Alembic strings in the case. so I threw them on and noticed small bits of corrosion on them(Mind you the former owner hardly played this thing at all from what I was told, so they just sat around) but they still sounded killer! Take this with you, nothing sounds like stainless steel round wounds, but they are tough on the frets. Nickel over steel round wounds are close but don't quite have that zing, but they are easier on your frets. There are strings like Elixer's or Thomastiks that don't have that grit tone that stainless steels have, but they will sound the same way from the first time you put them on, well- for a long while. Tonally they do last longer than average strings. Take care and Happy Holidays! |

Thanks for the help. I'm looking for 5-string and don't think bass blasters come in 5, but I like the idea of two sets, maybe i'll try them on my '50's p-bass. happy holidays. Frank |
