Has Alembic ever built an ash neck? Just dreaming... (Message edited by bassjigga on June 10, 2009) |

Hi Dave, No, I can't remember an Ash neck. I'm not elated about trying it either. Maybe as an inner component, but not as the outside neck pair. |

Ash necks lately have become sort of fashionable through the works of folks like Tobias (MTD) and Fodera. I also have seen that one of the luthiers over here <http://www.zebaoth-basses.de> indeed did used ash for a center laminate with maple outer laminates and whatever intermediate pieces. Maybe this indeed could be an option for fine-tuning a NT instrument's character. Presupposing one is sure about this being what one really wants... (-?!) Well actually, I'm wondering whether the abovementioned folks use graphite inlays to stabilize their necks... (Message edited by Heike on June 21, 2009) |

I like Matt Garrison's sound. That's what prompted the question. Granted I understand that it wouldn't necessarily sound the same in an Alembic. Just curious. |

I couldn't find details of the bass Garrison actually plays, but looking at his signature model, I'm thinking Garrison's bass is not a neck through. So, unlike a neck through where most of the tone is coming from the neck woods, a good bit of Garrison's tone is coming from the heel block, Walnut body, and top wood. At least that's what it looks to me looking at the pictures. |
