Hi Dave,

No, I can't remember an Ash neck. I'm not elated about trying it either. Maybe as an inner component, but not as the outside neck pair.

But Olie, wouldn't that be right up your alley for playing on "Ash Wednesday"?

Ash necks lately have become sort of fashionable through the works of folks like Tobias (MTD) and Fodera. I also have seen that one of the luthiers over here <http://www.zebaoth-basses.de> indeed did used ash for a center laminate with maple outer laminates and whatever intermediate pieces. Maybe this indeed could be an option for fine-tuning a NT instrument's character. Presupposing one is sure about this being what one really wants... (-?!)

Well actually, I'm wondering whether the abovementioned folks use graphite inlays to stabilize their necks...

I like Matt Garrison's sound. That's what prompted the question. Granted I understand that it wouldn't necessarily sound the same in an Alembic. Just curious.

I couldn't find details of the bass Garrison actually plays, but looking at his signature model, I'm thinking Garrison's bass is not a neck through. So, unlike a neck through where most of the tone is coming from the neck woods, a good bit of Garrison's tone is coming from the heel block, Walnut body, and top wood. At least that's what it looks to me looking at the pictures.
