Val,

With regards to the Anniversary Bass, I read in your post that the remaining burl rosewood is reserved for those instruments. Do you plan on getting more to use on other projects? If not, is there someplace you recommend that has it available, and do you use "non-Alembic" wood on Alembic guitars?

I know we have just barely started this guitar, but I've aleady begun thinking about the next one...and the next.

Curious,

Rosewood is a protected species under the CITES treaty, so I don't expect any new wood to be available unless someone discovers something 20 years old in their warehouse. We've only got enough to finish the Sterlings, so we're saving it for those.

I've got some other interesting burl woods though. We've got 2 pieces of Burl Madrone at are big enough to make doors out of. Would even make a nice single-piece top for a 6-string Series II bass. Burl Myrtle and Maple galore. Nice stuff too!

Amboyna Burl is quite delicious, orangey and yellows, sorta looks like boiling butter.

There's two burl rounds we've got in stock but have never used on an instrument, so I have really no idea what they will soud like. One is Bing, a wood from Indonesia that our wood supplier icked up a few piece of on his last trip there. Then there's the Tazmanian Eucalyptus Burl, it sort of resembles medium brown burl oak, but is much less dense. I'm curious to discover what these will sound like.

Mica,

Thanks for the explanation about the rosewood. Assuming that CITES doesn't stand for Can't I Take Even Some, I'll keep looking. Like the gaggle of Pauls before me, I'd love to see pictures of some of your other assorted burl.

Thanks,

Jonathan

"Assuming that CITES doesn't stand for Can't I Take Even Some"

Brilliant! I love that!

But... I'd also love to see some pictures of Alembic's strange, exotic woodstash. Sounds quite exciting!

Paul, when did you learn all of those numbers between 1 and 5?

Mica,

You know that I would love to see pictures of Alembic's private Strange and Wonderful Burl collection. I'm thinking about my next bass too, and if we can't have the rosewood burl, maybe one of the new exotic burls will do.

I wonder, who will be the first Alembician to get a bass made from one of these woods? I realize that on a neck-thru bass with ebony neck laminates that the body laminates will have less of an effect on the tone but still, we don't know what effect, if any, these new woods will have or even what the wood will look like. Hmmmmmmmm. Who will be the brave one?

Paul TBO,

I think he was playing on the "1-5" bass playing joke...you're now using the others too!

Thanks Ken, I guess that was to subtle. I'll watch that in the future.
I'm well known for being to subtle or to dry.
