Here are some pictures of the new arrival! I wish I were a better photographer, as these pictures realyl don't do it justice. Not to mention, you can't "hear" the pictures. Unbelievebable! (Message edited by mica on March 13, 2005) |

Valentino told me the guitar got to you safely and I'm glad to hear the it's doing well with you. If I remember correctly, that one has some special LEDs - red with amber at the 12th and 24th? |

Absolutely breathtaking. The woods are art...would love to know more about the selections and the logic behind them when you next post. The neck looks like a combination of flame maple, purple heart and cherry. Is it? Congratulations. Rob |

Thanks to all of you for the compliments. This is truely a work of art. Mica, frankly I am humbled by the involvement you all at Alembic have with us. I grew up hearing about Alembic and the influence your parents had on a very young Grateful Dead. Yes, I was very surprised when I opened this up on Friday. I was expecting the basic version with no stage lighting and the black tophat dials. The brass dials really do this right and the stage lighting on the neck (red and amber) is not only useful, but really outstanding looking! Rover, you asked about my selections and logic behind the woods. Well, this is completely an Alemibic design. You can go to the products section on the Alembic page and select guitars, then Tribute and read all about it. Basically (and anyone correct me if I'm wrong) these woods are traditionally called the "Hippie Sandwich" and are credited with giving Garcia that certain "sound" (although I think the magic and Karma behind his good soul had more to do with it). Alemibic has created a "tribute" guitar to those made famous by Jerry, namely Tiger and Rosebud. I still cannot get over the quality of sound that this instrument produces. I have a Fender Cybertwin that I play through have already spent countless hours creating new "amp" designs to go with this guitar. I feel like I've hit only the tip of the iceberg! More to come... |

Gil, Shucks. I confess I'd never checked out the Guitar section of the Alembic site. Thanks for directing me there; it also prompted me to read the History section which I recommend to anyone who hasn't already read it. Enlightening. The tour of the guitars section prompts another question...why is Cherry used in many of the high end guitar necks but rarely used for Alembic basses? Is there a peculiarity to the tone or wood density that makes Cherry (or Flame Maple for that matter) more applicable to guitars than basses? Similarly, is there a (tonal) reason that the double thick CocoBolo top is used on guitars but not basses? I would appreciate any insights anyone might offer. And, once again, congrats to Gil on a beautiful instrument. The top is mesmerizing. Rob |

Gil: Really pretty guitar: make that broken angel sing! The coco bolo on tributes has to be extra thick because it is so deeply carved. Mark, another guitar one. |

Gil, Very nice guitar. I often find new tones from the guitar. The amount of tonal change a couple slight twists can make are incredible. Enjoy your beautiful Tribute! Andrew |
