Ah Yes!. . Jack Casady! In this humble bassists opinion one of the *greatest* rock bassists ever to pick up an axe. . .SO creative. . SO truly original. In truth The Jefferson Airplane were *anything* but a typical rock band. Their foundations had as much to do with jazz and experimental music as anything else. Not to mention the fact that they were one of THEE most original vocal bands ever (I speak of course of the Grace, Paul, Marty, Jorma, Jack, Spencer version) Their harmony structures were so *out there*. . building all those great weird harmonies on 5ths instead of 3rds and from the top down! Damn I miss them. . . when people ask me nowdays whats missing in mainstream rock I tell them "go listen to 'After Bathing at Baxters' by The Jefferson Airplane". Then you'll know. . Jeff |

Jack Casady does not own number one anymore, he let it go in a moment of weakness & I believe he regrets it. The current owner is registered with us but prefers to remain anonymous, for understandable reasons. Valentino |

Jack Cassidy is an amazing bass player. If you ever see the Altomonte Concert video.... You'll notice he breaks an "A" string near the beginning of one of the first songs and he continues to play without missing a note. |

Valentino, Just wondering. Does Alembic have records of where many of the other early instruments are? Not asking who, of course. I hope they are not just sitting in the closets of unknowing heirs who know them only as "dad's old bass". Rich |

Saw Jack and Jorma along with Barry Mitterwald a few weeks ago in Minneapolis at a small venue called City Nights. Incredible concert, Jack surely has not lost his touch with his playing as energetic as it was in the mid to late 60s. Stunning performance with Jack's solo's a highlight. Alas, he no longer plays an Alembic. |

I repeat go listen to "After Bathing At Baxters". Jack and Jorma do a great solo piece called "Spare Chaynge". It's a great rambling jam of musical ideas. . .it must have been SO cool to be in San Francisco when The Airplane were on the rise. . |

Thanks Bucky, Brings back many memories. My birds eye maple short scale was my first Alembic and it looked a lot like yours. I bought mine in 1980 used at 48th Street for $800. Dela 217 owned it after me and now I hear its living in Europe. I loved the neck, the scalloped nut. The series electronics need a little work and the bridge was played hard, so I sent it to Alembic to have it fixed up. The new one will be my main instrument moving forward, so I will be playing it out a lot. It will not be spending much time in the case ! |

Pete , How have you been ? To Answer your question regarding the 1975 Hot Tuna Yellow Fever sessions AT Wally Heider Studios ___ I think yes! ___ 72-001 was played BUT after that perhaps not . _BY 1976 perhaps the Flying V with the Guild BI Sonics was played more for a while by Jack ( speculation ) .. In 1975 I was for a fact ! an Audio Engineering student at Wally Heider Studios , But was NOT completely cognizant of all the AWESOME stuff going on there at the time ___ ___ ___ ETC ... LOL |

Hi Wolf, 1975 cool! It’s great to have historical perspective. Not to hijack but I was around Tony Levin’s Yellow Musicman right after a King Crimson show when I worked at The Hit Factory in the 80’s. Fond memories. So 1975 O’L #1 was still around and in that year “Americas Choice” came out. One of my favorite all time Rock songs is “Funky #7” I would love to hear that was the Bass used! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5uQ9ImyN4M&feature=related I’ve been blissfully busy playing and designing a new Choral area in our Church. Peace, Pete |

Pete, This discussion of the chronology of 072-001 has spike my recollections of the MARX MEADOWS free concerts in The Golden Gate Park. In 1975 , one year out of High School I remember standing right at the edge of the stage watching Electric Hot Tuna playing. Jack was playing 072-001 just a few feet in front of me . I already had my two Guild Starfires, both already had work done by Alembic at the time . One of them had work started prior to my purchase and the other right after. Both of these instruments are showcased on this site. I also remember a Band fronted by Lisa Kindred call Ascension that played at those shows. In Accession I believe at one time there was a female Bass player that played an Alembic Bass , low serial number off course, considering this was also around 1975. In 1976 I participated in the control room at Golden State Studios in San Francisco of a recording of Lisa Kindred and others . There are some interesting pics here from the 1970's; There is a pic of Jack playing the flying V that seems like post 1975 perhaps 1976 or so . https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150273915425652.489417.305109585651&type=3 (Message edited by sonicus on April 17, 2014) |

Here is my answer to my knowledge ; Mica ,Susan or Ron or moderator please correct me if I am mistaken . ____Jack has not owned 72-01 for a long time . It was "number one "as an entire 100% Alembic instrument with a serial number. It was produced before Series I/II designations . It had more of a State variable filter __ such as a Super filter SF-2 electronics configuration ( LOW PASS/ HIGH PASS /BAND PASS ) rather then just low pass variation as a standard Series I/II electronics package has . 72-01 CLEARLY has had electronics changes and physical repairs and changes since its birth ! I remember when in the 1990's I could have purchased this bass but I did not . I should have ! Wolf |

Hey Wolf, thanks for the info. I currently own an Series I Alembic Small Standard Serial # 74-52. Through my communications with Mica, Susan and also Rick Turner I've come to believe that my bass was one of the ones Rick Turner made when he was still with them. He remembers the scalloped brass nut. I've always been fascinated with Jack and his playing. I loved The Airplane, they were simply the most intelligent and best "mainstream" rock band this country ever produced. He was a true innovator. And heard years after I bought my Alembic in 1974, that Jack had the very first one made. . .that monster looks heavy! |

Hi Bucky,I don't know the name of the actual owner! I know that He is registered at the Alembic but he wants to remain anonimous! The only thing that I remember when I've found that picture, was that the photographer wrote in the picture notes that the shot was made in Great Britain,so I assume that the bass is there.....but I don't Know! Honestly I understand that the owner wants to remain anonimous but some recent pictures for us.....why not!! ;-) |
