Hi everyone! I was bidding on a Alembic Elan on E-Bay last week. I was overbid by E 110 ($110) but the seller offered me the bass for E 1000 1 day later. After some research and help from clubmembers speicky and albrecht it turned out to be a hoax! A year ago I bought A 1983 spoiler on ebay for E 1146, (sadly not in my collection anymore)I payed in advance and everything went well. Now I've learned that a hoax like this is easy to set up, so please be carefull out there!!! |

Hi, FC, did ya do some kick a** in Germany tonite ???... LOL ! I missed to comment your Spoiler and gig pics with all the past trouble ! Really, really cool. Well, I own a 1983 Spoiler since last year. Just wondered if you were the previous owner, but that would be a way too much constructed story to be true... Just as life ! Take care (and play loud !) Hidiho! I got that 1983 Spoiler from Germany on feb. 22 2005 and swapped it in dec. 2005 for a Gibson ripper fretless. I just could resist, the Alembic was very worn out and had bad electronics. It was a great bass to play and I think it would be simple to fix the electronics though. But i'm also very happy with my (new) Ripper. My next Alembic will be an Elan I think and will be second hand for financial reasons. Still searching ebay for some real sellers. Will be visiting Germany very soon, my sister lives in in Epe (Gronou) Cheers! F.C. p.s. I will look for more pictures of the 1983 Spoiler, there must be some 'Gig'pics. somewhere |

Ok guys (and grlz) here's my confession... Sometimes when you're young, you say some things which you regret when you're growing older and wiser. I once said "My next Alembic will be an Elan" ... this was a lie... I got a Spoiler today! Oh yes, me = multiAlembic owner again! I swapped my Jazz Bass for a 1983 solid Koa Spoiler. Serial # 83S2674, so it's not the one I previous owned. Please check the Spoiler showcase, pictures will be there soon! here's an appatizer: 83S2674 SMB4 Spoiler Bass body: solid Koa neck: Maple, 32" medium scale fingerboard: Ebony peghead veneers: Koa originally made for: Musik Instrumenté birthday: May 17, 1983 Cheers! I'm not shure if it was on the club or in a personal mail, but you did mention it some time ago ;-) I think the serial number is 88S4710, it's extremely faint though... @ Bill: that's the '88, the '83 is the black one ;-) @ Taylor: fortunately, due to the altered electronics setup compared to Jason's bass (in original config) there's no room for the UKCUF sticker, there will be a Graffix sticker on it after I've send it back to Alembic for the Series II upgrade. :-) |

From the misc. section: "I just bought a complete and brand new Hardware set for my first ('88) Spoiler to celebrate :-) It came up on the used market over here (not the set from eBay, this is a complete set with Schallers, the bird tailpiece, bridge + bridgeblock (!), nut and all the mounting stuff. I will post a picture/info in the showcase section" The hardware on my Spoiler is in a miserable state... About ten years ago I polished it and applied a layer of clear powder coating, after some years the hardware started to corrode at some points... Talk about a nice challenge: Try to remove powder coating... The only way is to brutally sand it down or to use some nasty chemicals, I’m not sure how brass will react to that… With this new set I can take my time and see what’s the best way to remove it :-) Pics: More pics (also of the old hardware) will follow once I installed it :-) Annyone interested in the truss rods cover? Shoot me a mail ;-) (address is in my profile) |

Maybe I will use the sustain block for a diy project after I have cleaned up the original hardware, I'm not going to put a router on any of my basses ;-) The A and D tuner won't be a big problem, I happen to be a quite able metalworker (both in music and in my work) :-) Maybe I’ll try sanding the upper part of the bracket and the lower part of the other bracket so they slide over each other, leaving the holes intact. I have access to some need CNC equipment and can work with a tolerance of 0,1 mm. The set should arrive Saturday or Monday, stay tuned :-) |

Thanx, we had a blast! :-) The set arrived today :-) (huge version Got an old Activator brochure as bonus, I will post scans on the serial number page asap. Brand new (never used) bridge and bird: (huge version) Strings alignment looks fine: (huge version) (even with the first (highest) string fitted properly on the bridge saddle ) This bass is normally tuned ADGC hence the gigantic strings, for now I have it tuned BEAD to practice some low B chops in preparation for the new kid :-) Unfortunately the new nut is too narrow: (huge version) The old bird: (huge version) (huge version) Old bridge: (huge version) Most of the stains are under the powdercoating, you can’t feel them if you rub your fingers over it… I will take the “new” bridge apart this weekend and give it some tlc (there's some corrosion), for now I leave the bird as is (it has the factory coating on it) I only changed the ears of the top two Schallers for now. Anyone interested in the nut and/or truss rods cover can shoot me a mail (address is in my profile) I will post exact measurements in the for sale section asap. The tiny bar that goes under the nut is missing though… Happy family: (Message edited by fc_spoiler on May 20, 2010) |

I'm putting together a neck through, if the nut has the correct measurements I'd be tempted. Otherwise I'll be dremeling and filing a NOS brass Stars guitars nut to fit. So I gather your keeping the bird tailpiece (?). |

I will send the exact measurements asap, not sure what I'll do with the old hardware. I used a heavy belt sander for those poor Schallers, though I may shaved of a tad too much it works! :-)
