Uh, hi there...... Where did you aquire the bass pictured in your posting of 23 December? I had always been under the impression that only one other bass like Jack Casady's Yggsdrasil was produced, of which is owned by me, and has been since 1970. Now I see another one exists! What is it's serial number? Mine is SB 1830. Is this one owned by you? I'll save further questions for another post. I'll contact you by e-mail in a bit. Thanx.

Hi Nick- this bass is not mine-I wish- These pictures were taken during a recent ebay auction- I believe there were a few of these made-only Mica can answer for sure- I have been a huge fan of Phil Lesh and he once played a Guild/Alembic-(around late 71-1973) I am not sure if it has the Pluto filters though Mica stated in another post that Phil's 74 Alembic Custom 4 string had Pluto Filters on it- thats all the info I have-I would have bought this one but I was facing a potential layoff situation which will redirect your extra funds in a hurry |

I would have bought it too, but I just picked up 2 basses that same week! You just never know when this sort of thing will show up.

Uh, hi there Googe and Mike... Just read your posts. I wish that I had seen that on e-bay, but I'm too low on funds right now. Bummer! The Guild/Alembic of Phil Lesh's you are referring to , Googe, is his quad-wired bass, "The Godfather" (I believe). Geeez....I'll have to ask Mica about the above. This is fascinating. As soon as I have a minute, I'll find, scan, and post more pics of my Guild. Have a nice New Years, guys!

Phil's quadraphonic bass was an Alembic built bass and appeared around the same time as the wall of sound. "The Godfather" came before. |

Hey, I'm a little late jumping in but....I think you're both right - the GP article Googe quotes in the thread in Grateful's second link says "The Alembic has the same pickup configuration found on the Guild: two standard humbuckers and a quad." Thus, it would appear that both the Godfather and the Osage Orange bass have quad capability. Peter |

I should add to this thread and reveal facts and remove any mystery that I was the owner of this Bass from approximately 1974 to 1978. Alembic had installed the Beautiful CLEAR AMBER TRAPEZOIDAL pick ups and the BRIDGE & TAILPIECE and a electronics package that was current at the time of installation (1972-1973 ? ) with DS5 POWER SUPPLY system and for the previous owner ( we recently talked about this bass again ) When I first purchased it from the previous owner it did not have PLUTO ELECTRONICS and instead of the large WALNUT panel it had a HAMMER FINISHED raw brass plate with 5 controls and 2 surface mounted trim pots and a 5 pin connector . GEORGE MUNDY rewired the Bass for me installing his Pluto Filters at about he same time that he was wiring PHIL LESH"S OSAGE ORANGE BASS .The necessary Wood Work such as cutting the BASS opened even more and then hand crafting the beautiful WALNUT PANEL was done by DOUG IRWIN. All the additional work was done by Doug Irwin including the Turned Brass Pick Up Rings . In 1978 I came across a period of severe financial hardship and had to sell Many of my possessions including this Bass. It was truly a HIGH REGRET sale . I had put huge amounts off effort and Love into her design, planing and realisation. I am happy however to know that she is currently in good hands with someone who really appreciates her . Thanks for the update, it is a truely beautiful machine. It is nice to know some of the history that surrounds it, I am curious if any of the brasswork which was replaced still exists? Sorry to hear of your misfortune in having to part with it as well. |
