The shockwaves of Cliff's death reverberated more soundly than even those of Archduke Ferdinand...truly one of the greatest losses ever.

My favorite recorded Cliff moment: that really cool high-register fill in "Am I Evil" right after the breakdown....the engineer really pushed his fader up on that one.

I really don't get comparing the death of some guy I never heard of from some death metal band (judging by the pictures) to World War I. A bit over the top, maybe?

Yes I am sure it is a bit over the top. But I remember that day very well though. I was in high school and everyone acted as if a close family member had died. Metallica has a very close following and the death of their bassist was a very sad moment.

I was attempting an aggrandizement. Looks like I succeeded.

ok, i can sort of understand not being a Metallica fan, but how can you not be a big fan of all the bass players that they have had, Cliff Burton-bass genious and crazy fast with his fingers, Jason Newsted-very melodic rhythems and use of chords in his bass solos, Robert Trujillo-not my favorite but still a damn good bass player

Yeah, the pic with his SB-1000 and Mesa rig is great, too. Looks like it must have been either Donington '85 or Day on the Green '85. Well, if there are any newly found Alembic pics, I guess this is where they'll end up!

Just an FYI. Cliff's Black Alembic was stolen out of his car in Castro Valley. I am not sure of the date but it was sometime in 85.

I dont know if Alembic has any record of this Spoiler or it was reported stolen to them. It could be that Cliff never wrote down the serial? It would be intresting to find out as I am sure the bass is in circulation and someone may own it and not know its history.

Great find! I think I remember one bootleg from Germany '84 (maybe the "Capn's of Crunch" bootleg CD) where James introduced Cliff before his solo. James said Cliff was going to show off his new gear, or something like that. He must have been talking about the Spoiler. I will have to try and find the exact show...I always wondered which bass he was unveiling (Aria SB1000 or Alembic), but it must've been the Alembic.

There is a ton of Alembic with Cliff pics on this video which is really cool but kind of crappy sound quality:

I can't wait for Mica to look up that serial on my Spoiler because there is a good chance it's Cliff's old one.

Cliff was the most amazing Metal Bassist. His technique was so advanced. That picture of him with the short bangs in his eyes is an indication of Cliff having the Spoiler as far back as 1983. This means he probably used in on 1984's "Ride The Lightening". Great "lightening" tone on that record, which has been remixed with added bass on you tube..thanks to Guitar Hero. No complaints, here.

I'm pretty sure RTL is recorded with the Rickenbacker.
You can download the December 20, 1984 London show from Metallica.com: http://www.livemetallica.com/live-music/0,160/Metallica-mp3-flac-download-12-20-1984-Lyceum-London-UK.html
The spoiler must be on that recording, the above picture in Amsterdam was taken December 7, 1984.
Also Cliff's best solo (imho)

RIP Cliff. One of my biggest inspirations and favorite bassists, actually, my favorite tied with jason Newsted. and Pete steele. I really hope that that bass is found and returned to either Metallica or the Burtons.
