Hi Ricardo
If you love that sound, then you should be able to get it from most Series 1 basses
I listened to the track-------------great playing and a great sound!
Sounds just like my 1976 Series 1.
Remember though, that So MANY sounds can be dialled into a Series bass. You have a 1977 model, so you should be able to get these sounds easily
Have fun experimenting!!

I don't know how much luck you would get dialing in that tone without the bellbottoms! :-)

Nice clip. Who's the second drummer (ie, not Jaimoe)?

Butch is there, it's the other guy. After some research I found that it's Dan Toler's brother. Wonder why Jaimoe wasnt there. I saw this version of the ABB with Edgar Winter at the Boston Garden and again with Bonnie Raitt at UMass Amherst in 1980. Great shows! In fact, that might be the last time I saw the Bros. Silly me.

That guy is amazing, and the S1 sounds fantastic!

Last time I saw the Bros. was in Macon GA at The Grand Opera House (a 1000 seat theater), from the 4th row. My wife at the time worked at a restaurant with Judy Petty, the wife of Joe Dan Petty. Joe Dan was a long-time member of the ABB road crew, and he died in a plane crash on August 8th, 2000. The Brothers came down and played what basically amounted to his wake the next day. Oteil was with them at that point in time, and I have to say that it was one of the top 3 most amazing and moving musical experiences I have ever had.

Every Christmas, a group puts on a version of "The Nutcracker" at this venue. During one point in that show, they dump thousands of rose petals out onto the stage. Well, during "In Loving Memory of Elizaeth Reed," one of these rose petals, which had apparently been sitting up in the grid for at least 8 months, through dozens of shows, chose this moment to abandon it's perch and make it's way towards the stage. This little rose petal fluttered back and forth in it's descent for what semed like an eternity, and it did not go unnoticed by the crowd. I don't know if you've ever been in a situation where a thousand people choked up at the same time, but let me assure you, it was palpable. It was as if we all felt Joe Dan was saying "thank you, and goodbye."

I had seen the Brothers a few times before, and have heard all their released material, and I can honestly say that I have never heard them, or any other band, play like they played that afternoon.

Sorry for the digression, but seeing this video triggered the memory, and I had to share it.

Cool thread. I have a live tape of an Allmans show from 1979 featuring Rook that has what might be the finest live Alembic tone I've ever heard.

Actually, the Allman Brothers-Alembic connection is pretty strong. Lamar Williams, who repalce Berry Oakley (their original bass player) was an Alembic player, as was Allen Woody, who held down the bass chair from 1989 to 1997, was also a huge Alembic fan.

Looking up Lamar at various sites tells a story of a very interesting person. He went AWOL in Viet Nam after deciding he didn't like the reasons he was there and lived in the jungle for a few months. Eventually he died of cancer, which was most likely due to Agent Orange exposure. In all the interviews with people who hung out with him and played with him, he comes across as a very interesting person who loved music and his family very much.

I've always loved his playing both with ABB and Sea Level, but didn't really know the depth of his experience as a person until now.

Edwin; I dug out my copy of "Midnight Riders" and gleaned the following from a quick scan.

Apparently, some time in late 1980 or early 1981, not too long after the band had been reformed after a long break up and the demise of Capricorn, Jaimoe was fired in a dispute over financial matters and replaced with David "Frankie" Toler. However, this period didn't last very long and was followed by an even longer breakup in the mid '80s.

I just got the Skydog book. Only a couple of dozen pages in, but it looks pretty cool. Some really great early Allman Bros (and I mean just the brothers themselves!) pictures.

Hey, this guy is from Cincinnati. That is my neck of the woods. He actually lived in the Over the Rine district. Rough territory now.

Wow, here it is in 2011 and I just saw this thread. Thank you all for the kind words on the alembic playing and tone. The rig was huge and powerful and the bass is just a wonderful instrument.

Hi David; welcome to the board! Like so many others, I hold the Allman Brothers Band in very high regard for their contributions to and influence upon our musical heritage. Thank you for being there, for your contribution to the music, and for helping to keep the momentum of that tradition going.

Oh, and great bass!
