Hey Paul, REALLY NICE. Not many Spoiler postings. I'm surprised.

Very nice spoiler Paul,

beautiful coco bolo top. I'm curious about a couple of things, did you have it converted to a fretless yourself? I'm asking because I see that you have the oval inlays on the fretboard, which leads me to believe that this baby was not born a fretless. When I inquired about turning one my basses into a fretless, Mica pointed out to me that sliding over the inlays would produce a different sound from the ebony wood, so I guess my other question to you would be : how does it sound when you slide on the inlays?

Valentino

Valentino,

I actually ordered it as you see it. Sliding across the inlays wasn't really a problem. There were a couple of notes though where when the string was "fretted", so to speak, that the string made contact with the inlays BEHIND the note and created a very slight buzz...wasn't a problem playing in a blues/rock type context, although I can see where if it were applied to a quieter, perhaps jazz type context, someone may not have been happy with it.

As I later discovered, I'm not a great fretless player and the active electronics were very revealing as far as intonation goes. I sold this bass last year...tax man & divorce lawyers sort of gave me the double whammy.

Fear not though, I still have my '85 fretted Spoiler, which I tend to use for acoustic gigs & my '01 MK Standard...coco bolo...that I use for electric shows. There are a couple of pics of my MK in the signature gallery.

Ya know, I sure would love to have this bass back & put a fretted fingerboard on it, sigh...

Oh well, it's tax time again & that means that Alembics will be changing hands at a dizzying pace. Those expecting to owe will sell & those expecting a refund-(me)-will be in the market. Should be interesting...
