I've just been to Stanleys web site and seen that his new CD is due out in October and the cover has him lovingly holding his Dragons breath alembic. Really interesting cover shot makes him look like he has alembic angel wings. http://www.stanleyclarke.com/frontpage.htm |

I love that effect he gets by tapping the strings with his fingers over the pickups. Jazzyvee |

I purchased the CD and I must say it's the best recording he's done in quite some time. I highly recommend picking up a copy. John |

I pre-ordered via HMV and they said it was out on the 29th October. I guess they were lying as it still hasn't arrived. Graeme |

Bass Player did a review of the new CD. In typical BP fashion they didn't mention Alembic. They did mention (twice) that he played a bit on his Fender Victor Bailey acoustic bass guitar. His Alembic is shown twice in the cover photo but they just can't bear printing the name. It reminds me of a character in the Harry Potter books. Almost everybody is afraid to say his name aloud so they just refer to him as "he who shall not be named". Interesting thought process going on over there at BP. Rich |

for me wich have the complete discography of Stan and I listen him from 1974 ... this CD is not the best one ... from very far too, nothing new, too much acoustic bass (contrebasse), always the same tunes (bad asses) and a big resumption (toys of men)... I like "come on". Personnaly I'm waiting for a really recent live album (Newport, North sea Jazz...). |

I think Stanley is playing alot more on his upright these days. If he'd recorded his gig at London's Jazz Cafe this year, at least half would have been on upright with a further song on his fender acoustic. I don't think this is a bad thing - I really like to hear some different things going on through a gig. Graeme p.s. Mrs J is keeping my copy of the cd til Christmas ;-( |

As I recall Stanley has always preferred the acoustic bass. It was only Chick Corea saying he needed to learn electric if he wished to stay employed in RTF that caused him to play electric. I've always liked the original incarnation of RTF when Stanly still played acoustic. I saw them a couple of times and the playing was always great. Keith |

I love how stanley plays regardless if it is on the double bass or bass guitar. He has an unique voice on both instruments and that is worth hearing. Once I get the current CD I can comment on where he is at now. Jazzyvee |

I just got the Toys of Men CD today and have listened to it a few times now. I love it. My favourite so far is Jerusalem. That is so sweet. The reworking of Toys from the Vertu abum as the introduction track to the CD is magnificent. A very sensitive interpretation if I may say so. I'm sure you will understand what I mean by this. But this CD sounds like a very mature record in many aspects. His playing, the recording, arrangements and the compositions, the whole experience is a fantastic package. There is something for old and new fans. Yeah there are many trademark licks on the album but thats cool too. I really love the acoustic and upright bass tracks as well. I'm going to feature the CD on my next Jazz Radio programme which is a week on Christmas eve. Stan the man is definitely backand on top. Jazzyvee |

Back on top indeed! I got my copy through the post on thursday and so far it hasn't been off the CD player. There's a very broad section of Stanley's skill on it and I can categorically state that there's no filler. I really like the track 'Bad asses' which sounds like the traditional Stanley & Alembic tunes I was introduced to him with. It's been an agonising wait but well worth it. Yep mine has been on repeat all day so far. It reminds me of the days I'd be waiting for the next Bob Marley & The Wailers Album. Then I'd copy it to tape then play it exclusively in the car for weeks on end. I look forward to doing this with this album. I may consider adding one of the tracks to my set list for my next Clarkee gig on 2008. |
