i stumbled across this picture of them, and i saw a few farther away shots but there is no mistaking that bass.

pinback

a little blurry, but best i could find... from what i read they are picky about their equipment, looks like he made a good choice then!

They're my favorite. The bassist, Armistead, was once in a superb avant-noise group called Three Mile Pilot. He has monsterous hands an incredible technique where he strums out bass lines, chords, and melodies, often all at once. And he sings very well, to boot. The guitarist in the picture is Rob Crow, the vision behind 5 or 6 other super-cool indie/lo-fi/noise-pop bands. And the result is beautiful indie-pop music.

They have 3 full-length albums out, a handfull of EPs, and they tour a bunch. Check them out at pinback.com.

Because I'm always interested in the ultra rare combination of good indie music and Alembic I've checked out the music via Amazon.com and I absolutely loved it! I just ordered 'This is a Pinback CD', 'Blue Screen Life' and 'Summer in Abaddon' albums, along with the 'Offcell' EP. I love this club!

Wilfred,

The picture above is a regular SC Deluxe (3 maple + 2 purpleheart) but in the more recent pictures on that site he's holding a Brown Bass (2 mahogany + 2 maple + 1 walnut).

I went to the Pinback show last night in Pontiac, MI and brought my 92 SC standard along for ABSIV to play (like a mini alembic meet) I'll post some pics on here in few minutes in case anyone is interested. The Brown bass that adriaan mentioned before seems to have been on loan to him, his current main bass (in a case that says Alembic #1 [old]) is a 93 Stanley Deluxe and his backup bass is a 04 Stanley Deluxe with amber side LED's I've only seen him play the 04 when we were messing around on stage before the show.

Never heard of these guys until now....listened to their stuff on iTunes and it's nice.

If you had to recommend an album, which one would you suggest?

My favorite Album is "Blue Screen Life". I still listen to something from it almost everyday! But you can try their newer stuff as well, as its a bit harder than their older stuff (if you like that more). I think some of the best songs are on their EP's too. Try "Offcell", theres some really awesome bass work from Zach in that one. But they are all good :-)

I'm going to bump this thread for related content. I've been uploading some Pinback covers to Youtube. Zach is also the reason I got an Alembic initially, and is my biggest influence. If you haven't give Blue Screen Life and Summer in Abaddon a listen. The bass lines are very subtle but extremely complex.
