Touring Case

At home in its Calzone 1/2" Touring case. I don't know why they put a carrying handle on these cases. With a heavy bass in them, I have to use a hand truck to move em around. I want roadies! Big roadies! That's all folks.

I don't know how I missed this when it was first posted, but man, your bass is incredible. The back is as beautiful as the front, and that's saying alot! The front is breathtaking.....

Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures. I'm sorry it took so long to respond to them. I guess there's a reason for everything...Your getting pissed off allowed me the opportunity to check out your bass. Thanks... Take care.

Nigel (Thomas) my friend,

I've missed your informative and amusing commentary recently, and now understand why.

I recall scrolling down through these beautiful photos - I especially love the accent laminates on the body and how they match the neck - and suddenly coming upon this rather jarring funeral reference. It just seemed horribly out of place, and I think I have some sense of your reaction.

Now, this is awkward, because the last thing I want to do is defend Keavin. Frankly, I wish he would just 'amp it down' a little, because for about two years now I've been reading everything on this board, I've developed a few offline friendships, and generally found this to be a respectful, mature, thoughtful, warm, and sensitive place to hang out - and to learn a lot.

While I appreciate his enthusiasm, Keavin's signal-to-noise ratio is not the best. Though a bit tiresome at times, I think his heart's in the right place, and I really can't believe he intended any offense - it was probably just some visual association that struck him at the time (perhaps after one of those 12-packs...). I'm pretty sure it was meant as simply a weird observation, and just happened to be in extremely poor taste.

It's also possible you (understandably) over-reacted a bit. All this web/email stuff is really tricky, given the range of vocabularies, writing styles, and even languages involved here. But it's good reminder that it's easy to misinterpret, and we all need to be careful.

Whether you choose to stay or leave, Thomas, thanks for taking the time to explain. Though this is allegedly a moderated discussion, and you have to register, we are in fact a self-moderated group, and I am continually amazed at how well that works, with extremely rare exceptions. I've seen a lot of good people join in over the last year, but the thought of losing some is troubling (speaking of which, where the hell is Joey? I'm getting a bit worried about him, maybe time to check in...).

I'm going to pay heed to this little note I have here that reminds me to 'wait until morning to post', but I needed to say something.

All the best.

Once again Bob, you are the voice of reason, I do so enjoy your thoughtful musings and postings.

I can't add much to what brother Bob has already said except that I think this club is full of some of the nicest people in the world. A group that encompasses a myriad of personalities, cultural backgounds & musical preference yet comes together here in this fellowship with an unmatched spirit of brother and sisterhood in support of one another. It's what distinguishes our club from other music forums. Let's not have that change.

So with that in mind, I say:

Thomas - I hope to see more of your postings

Keavin - Humor needs to be appreciated by all parties in order to be considered funny

Very nice bass indeed. I used to own one myself. I really liked it a lot, but I just couldn't get along with it's size and the fact that it was not a small standard! I am just sooo used to that small body style.

I know what you mean. It is really difficult to express emotion with words on the web. A while back I posted something that offended someone. I really did not mean for that to happen either, and I upset the wrong person. When you read my posts, it is dificult to detect sarcasm and a smile. That is something that writers do. I just play music. I am sure we all are much better musicians than writers.

Here, here, Dela. I try to write carefully because I know the limitations of Email, etc. I also know I can be misunderstood more easily than I like in person. But I value my participation in this community, so it is well worth a little extra care (and I hope that's working).

The fun of this community is being able to be spontaneous. But that also carries the risk of running straight through your own blindspots and communicating in a way that causes regrets.

My two cents...

It's a cryin' shame that one the best forms of humor, sarcasm, is one of the hardest to get across on this popular form of communication. I've worked in technology for twenty years now, and I can't count the number of times I've seen someone become offended on a newsgroup or bulletin board, when the intent really wasn't there. With the global reach of a group such as ours, misunderstandings will occassionally occur. I've been a member of this group nearly two years, and I can't recount an instance of a member berating or poking at another member. We are all drawn here by our love for these amazing works of art, that just happen to double as musical instruments, and our desire to share that love - and amazement! To be perfectly honest, I read Keavin's post, scrolled back to the picture in question, and howled with laughter. I got it. I think the instrument and case in question are beautiful, and, that case certainly provides maximum protection for the work of art inside.

BTW, if anyone is offended, or just doesn't understand my humor or my point of view, understand that I worshipped the humor of Monty Python, Firesign Theater and George Carlin in my formative years. I'm "just a tool," "a student like you," and if I've offended anyone, I'll just "run away!" Oh, the weather forecast tonight calls for, "dark, with partly scattered light in the early morning hours." Laugh-on everybody, please! "And now, for something completely different.."

Sooner or later in everyone's life, they have to sit down and eat what they have sown. I have been back awhile and have avoided this thread because of bad memories and a feeling of humiliation for losing my cool over issues that should not have mattered. A death in the family forced me to fly to California and take care of business I wanted no part of. I should have focused my frustration and aggression where it was deserved. My Shirley McClain, plop crystals on old men's bellies and howl like a cat fight to psychically heal them sister, and my emotionless, bitter, I hate everyone for one reason or another brother. I was just getting ready to book the flight when I read Keavin’s remark that popped the damn inside and he paid the price. I sincerely apologize.

Needless to say, while back in my hometown, I walked out when the vultures swooped to strip the corpse, so no custom Alembic for me this year. I am obviously over this event enough to be sarcastic, myself, about this, so . . . My thanks and apologizes to all parties involved, and especially a sincere thank you to Bob and Susan. Please excuse me now. The timer went off for my before bedtime Prozac. Ya'll have fun and take care, and know that being stuck here in the wasteland pre-punishes me for much of the trouble I get myself into, and cause for others. Yo, pass the moose burger . . .

New Rule Added - Never order an ATA case with an interior named after a cocktail (Champange). Next case ordered will be a dark, velvety maroon inside. More of a cathouse appeal . . .

And Michael, next time you are forced to accept another of those ugly playing, long-scale basses, I will gladly accept it and not hold a grudge, I promise.

It's okay now, Nigel (Trevor, Thomas, whatever).

My guess is that many of us here suspected that some difficult things were going on in your life, but as you so eloquently pointed out - it's all part of being a family, and to some extent, that's sort of what this group is about.

As you say, sooner or later we all go through things like this. Hopefully, we do the best we can; with luck and a bit of attention, we learn some things in the process - and if we can pass along those insights to others, that's even better, so thanks.

But, uhm, try to stay on the Prozac schedule, okay? :-) I'm pretty sure you don't want to hear how messed up my family is/was (swooping vultures were involved, among other things).

Besides, we're supposed to be talking about basses (well, okay, maybe the occasional guitar... give 'em time, they'll eventually come around).

Nice to have you back.
-Bob

Brother Nigel,

it's sooooo good to have you back!
Reading your posts always make me grab a dictionary where -of course- you cannot find the words you afre using.
Is "eloquently" the good word?
And I am also happy that you US-people don't start talkin' there dialect.
I had the Boston round which I could hardly follow.
Now this Main lingo.
Do they speak also another lingo in California??

Totally, like, fer sure! But the lingo is bitchin' once ya hang, bro.

Nigel,

I'm one of 6 children in my family, so take your situation and double it. Although, in reality my family really isn't that bad, the few times we all get together, it's...well...stressful to say the least. It's been my feeling that the members of this club are both very patient AND very forgiving, as can be seen through this thread.

BTW, Very beautiful bass.

Thank you all, as it is nice to be back. I certainly did miss this place and you all.
As for the family scene, I was born the youngest from a bad gene pool. My mother and I seem completely different from my father and my siblings. Well, my dealings with that side of the family are finished now. Luke, there is another - Ahhh!!!!! Anyway, I am the farthest point I can be away from them, and still be in America. I learned early on that blood don't make family, one's heart does. OK, back on my Prozac schedule. No more slip ups!

Nigel:

Well I just LOVE those 20th's. There's a spare elegance of the clear maple with the purple heart as a 'pinstripe' around the body, and tracing the circle inside the Omega. I'm a big maple guy, so they are just right down my alley . . .

(Bob, I guess you've since seen my return . . .)

As a Prozac 'veteran', I heartily agree with staying on your schedule. However, since ProZ has such a long 'half-life' (almost a month to completely clear out of your system), you don't get the roller coaster of emotions some of my friends get with some other SSRI's, most notably Effexor: Miss one of those, and you're going for a ride pretty damn quick.

Someday, if popular demand requires, I'll tell my Prozac story.

Good to Have You Back,

Hey Nigel: I can relate to your remarks on family. I have one of those, too (believe me!). This summer's entertainment resulted in one young member going to jail (potentially for a long time). Living far, far away is a great coping mechanism (I count on it!). Don't let it get to ya'.

I respected your remarks above, but my regard for you is based on all your comments and remarks (which I appreciate) - not one (understandably) bad day. Good to have you back.

I've looked in on this thread from time to time just to gawk at the amazing bass you have. I'm a maple fan too, and yours is a beaut! Glad you're back.

I can understand your position regarding the remarks, my dad died Memorial Day morning, out of the blue and with no warning of any kind. News like that really knocks the wind out of your sails. You certainly have my sympathies.

Thanks guys for the understanding and kind words. I sincerely appreciate them. I know I am not alone in having a slightly 'different' kind of family than all the 1950's prime time shows depicted. Thanks for sharing. Hey Joey. If you are into telling of your Prozak story, I will certainly be interested in hearing it.

Speaking of family members. I just lost one. No one will come here to 'gawk' at my bass any more. They will be gawking at Ed's (oggydoggy) new bass. I feel assured that he will love this bass as much as I have. I am packing her up today and shipping her to Ed tomorrow. Not a perfect bass, but it surely has the most perfect neck on it. She's all yours Ed.

Since early September this wonderful bass has been residing in Texas, much to the pleasure of the new owner, that would be me.
It's in great shape for a fifteen year old, thanks Nigel. Absolutely the best neck ever.
If only it had side LEDs to go with the omega, neck laminates and electronics...ah, that would be too much.

Wait, no it wouldn't. That would be perfect.

Michael:

Quilted maple is so 3 dimensionally yummy!

As far as side LEDs, if you don't know about them already, you should search this site for "hotdotz". Side LEDs for about $50-$75. I believe. Everyone that has tried 'em seems to like 'em. I'm planning on putting a set on an old Fernandes I have when I get it back from my guitar tech (where it is essentially being Alembicized).

Hey Mike:

I am extremely pleased you love this bass and it is in such a good home. It is an outstanding bass. The Hotdotz seem like a very good way to put LEDs on her for less than a grand, and are removable, if you don't like em. The price sure seems inviting! Have fun and take care.

Bill - I've followed the Hotdotz thread. I'm waiting to see if there will be any follow-on performance posts...they do look like an nice affordable option. I had LEDs on a prior Alembic, they're terrific.

Tom - The bass is great, plays beautifully and the balance issue is just about kicked in the butt. Thanks for your emails; they've been helpful.

take care,
Mike

Had some some extra time at work today, as if you couldn't tell, and cruise thru and saw this bass. Played it on a few occasions.

Still one of my favorites. The current owner is OK too. :-)
