Hmmm ... I'm probably bending the definition of "current" a good bit, and maybe even the definition of "band", but I was watching this video a couple nights ago and thought it might be at least a little bit appropriate for this thread. It does meet some of the other criteria; for instance "extremely talented" - check; not in the "mainstream" - check. The band is Shakti, and the video is from 1999. But probably something much more in line with what you're looking for, and what I think many of you will love, is Garaj Mahal, here doing a really cool cover of Fly Like an Eagle. Garaj Mahal features "extremely talented" and very well known bass player Kai Eckhardt and guitar player Fareed Haque. Enjoy! | ||

P-Tree for me too. Saw them on their last mini tour in San Francisco. We got there early, and I was huggin' the stage. Not the best for sound, but a great place to see them play. | ||

MuteMath was pretty cool - you would probably also like Ozric Tentacles - spacey groove prog rock - no vocals though. And I second the Porcupine Tree, Garaj Mahal, and Marillion (our daughter is named Kayleigh BTW) A couple more bands that are somewhat under the radar include Dejam Karet, Boud Deun, Tunnels (w/ Percy Jones on bass), Transatlantic (a new find for me), Agustin Barreto, Doug Johns, Jazz Pistols, and Niacin. All of these bands were found via Pandora Radio www.pandora.com Just start a "radio station" with a favorite artist and it will pick songs/bands that are similar - if it goes the wrong direction, just click the don't like button. A good example is Genesis - it can go prog-rock or pop girly-crap (due to Phil's later stuff). Awesome resource. Plus - I have found some cool stuff via the Alembic Club - this one in particular. I need to get some of the CDs that Joeri is on http://www.joerihommerson.com/ And here's a local legend - Stan Lassiter - fastest fingers I have ever seen. Nice catch on the Ozrics. Love 'em and have about 10 of their recordings. Ed Wynne is an incredible guitarist. Very much in the space fusion with trippy synths mode of the great Gong (not the Pierre Moerlen-led version, but the Daevid Allen/Steve Hillage crew). | ||

I also like this one a lot. Until I saw this, I couldn't figure out from the record how he got such a crisp slap tone from a fretless bass. I always thought that Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros deserved more attention. The stuff Joe Strummer did with The Clash always seemed to overshadow his later works. I guess I'm a bit unusual in that I prefer those albums to his earlier work. | ||

I'll throw in another Percy Jones vehicle (not his band - he was a guest )- NOVA, an italian prog/fusion band. I've only ever been able to find one of their albums - VIMANA which is only available on vinyl (if you can find it). It also features 3 great percussionists, Zakir Hussein, Phil Collins and Narada Micheal Walden. Great music from the mid 70's. Graeme | ||

Graeme; I just ran a check and it appears that Vimana was released on CD in 2005 on both Arista and BMG. And if you're really desirous, there is currently a used CD of Vimana for sale on Amazon for $99.49. Further reading suggests that Percy Jones was one of two bassists credited on Nova's "Sun City" album (the only other Nova album I found with a Jones credit); but that one does not appear to have been released on CD. | ||

My vinyl copy is still in great condition so I'll forego the pleasure of spending almost $100 on the CD ;-) I will have to keep an eye on the used LP market for Sun City - percy is easily my favourite fretless player, achieving a unique sound. I remember once reading an interview with Jeff Berlin where he was asked why he didn't play fretless. He said he didn't want to sound like another Jaco clone - seems to me like Percy managed ok ;-) Graeme | ||

I used to get to see Mark quite a bit in the early 80s in Boston. It would seem that he would have been a serious Jaco clone, given that he studied with Jaco and then took over his gig, but he's got his own voice. What's weird is that Jeff, a great bassist as well, doesn't even have to play fretless to invoke the voice of Jaco. He is a pugnacious SOB, but that's part of his charm. Last night I saw the Tedeschi Trucks Band in Colorado Springs, with Oteil on bass. A ten-piece band that really brings the shizzle!!! Highly recommended. | ||

I am prepared to name Trucks Best Electric Guitarist Of His Generation; likewise undeniaby one of the all-time greats. Must suck to have every qualification to be a bona-fide Guitar Hero, except to live in a time when such heros go unnoted, while accolades seem reserved for people who consider looping samples of other peoples' work to be creative.
