Got this month's VINTAGE GUITAR in the mail yesterday, with a sub-headline procaliming 'The 25 Most Valuable Basses' on the cover. Of course, it includes most of the usual suspects (60's Fenders, Firebird and EB-series Gibsons, etc). However . . . . Out of these 25, four were Alembics: The mind-bending John Judge doubleneck, the S1, the S2, and the Brown Basses were all in the list. And at prices we actually see them changing hands for in the used market around here. The short tag for the S2 entry noted that Alembic 'reinvented the electric bass, using low-impedance pickups, multi-laminate construction, onboard preamps, they were like nothing before'. Of course, everything else listed WAS what came before, what with Jazzes and Rics (the 4005, the ONLY vintage bass I'd like to have one day), Paul's Hofner, and Gibson basses . . . surely my favorite oxymron in the English language . . . Anyway, it's out to subscribers now, and should be in the racks PDQ. Also a short piece with Anthony Jackson with his stunning 36"/no knobs Fodera AJ Signature. And also to my great relief, after a one-month sabbatical, the terrifically zany ad-guitar descriptions are BACK at the Willie's American Guitar full page ad. YYYAAAAYYYYYYYY ! ! ! J o e y |

There's a guy here in town with a Ric 4005. I've actually played a couple of them locally over the years. They are not on my list. A 4001/4003 would sure be fun, but the 4005 is just almost unplayable unless you're a guitar player imho.. John |

I see them occasionally (4005) down at George Gruhn's for just STUPID money. It really is a piece of work, but that 'R' tailpiece, etc., it just hits me. Thank goodness I'll never be able to justify one ! J o e y |

I couldn't set up the bridge on a Ric if my soul depended on it. I don't know that it's bad, per se, but just Alien. (Message edited by byoung on June 10, 2011) |

My tech, (Jeremy at Rudy's Music in NYC midtown)who is excellent, really hates the Ric bridge. I have a lot of those basses in my collection for him to tweek. I can't say I blame him! |

That was a great article! Pics two, and real world info. My only disagreement was all the Gibson basses in it (apoligies to Gibson players). Dave |

I have a Hipshot replacement Ric bridge on one of my two 4001s. A direct replacement, and vastly superior to the stock Ric bridge if you ask me. |
