During a recent visit to my local music store – Guitar Showcase, San Jose – I had the pleasure to play around with their big selection of Alembic basses. I fell in love with the sound of an 8-string after playing the Alembic Spyder they had on display. As a result I have now ordered a custom 8-string – and while it is being build – I am trying to get in shape, so I won’t do too much damage to the Alembic brand or the reputation of Alembic players… Does anybody have some nice licks/riffs/tabs that would be optimal to leverage the full sound of an 8-string bass… I have been looking through the different areas of the Alembic club, but haven’t found any threads with Tabs… Christian PS: Out of curiosity – how many of you play 8 strings… (Message edited by Northlight on June 15, 2004) |

I'm currently building a 10-string, and may have an Alembic 12-string built. Right now my 10-string is sortof playable but a major component of the bridge is a popsicle stick :-P (I suppose an LOL is in order too) You definately should check out two websites 8stringbass.com and 12stringbass.com SoM |

Christian, besides my Spyder4 I also own a Spyder8´. Yes you are right it is a fantastic sound. Check out some of John Entwistles songs, both solo work and with the Who. He did many songs with an 8string. Was the Spyder8 you played strung with bass string/octave string or octave string/bass string. To my knowledge most of the Spyder8 are buildt bass string/octave string to play it fingerstyle. I prefer the old classic setup so that I can play it with a pick. Many greetings Oliver (Spyderman) |

Amongst my four Alembics there resides an 8 string Spoiler. I don't use it a whole lot but there are some songs that are enhance by it and it comes in real handy for original compositions.... John Paul |

Christian, I play a cheap Dean 12-string quite a bit. It's a great sounding, nice playing instrument. My 8-string influences would have to be Greg Lake on ELP's Works Vol. I (I LOVE Fanfare for the Common Man), assorted Chris Squire with YES and on his solo Fish Out Of Water, and John Paul Jones' recent solo albums (where he plays double-course 12-strings). My ultimate dream is to own an Alembic 10-string Series I, ebony lams and 35 inch scale, probably in the Valentino lots-o-points body style... John |
