Well, here's something you don't see every day - this from Letters of Robert Louis Stevenson, Vol. IV, from a letter written by Stevenson from Samoa to his literary agent Sidney Colvin in Great Britain (Edinborough, Scotland, I think) on May 21, 1893, while working on The Ebb Tide, published in 1984. The Janet Nicoll is a ship on which Stevenson and his wife traveled from Australia to the South Sea Islands in 1890: "May 21st. - And here I am again back on p. 85! the last chapter demanding an entire revision, which accordingly it is to get. Ahd where my mail is to come in, God knows! This forced, violent, alembicated style is most abhorrent to me; it can't be helped; the note was struck years ago on the Janet Nicoll, and has to be maintained somehow; and I can only hope the intrinsic horror and pathos, and a kind of fierce glow of colour there is to it, and the surely remarkable wealth of striking incident, may guide our little shallop into port..." |
