I am checking out shipping Vince a package measuring 6”x18”x51” weighing @17 pounds containing the original hard-shell case to the Europa he bought from Magalia, CA to his home in England. I valued the case at $350 (That is about max of what a G&L case would be right? Unfortunately, UPS says because it is 51” long, billable weight will be at 40 pounds, not 17 (Space is limited on transports across the ocean, so this seems to make some sense – Can’t ship Styrofoam balls on a plane, now can we?!) . FedEx starts their horror show out at $897.51 – Almost triple of what UPS is asking. I understand I need to ship this by boat, not plane to get a reasonable cost for the item. For a five digit bass, is $500 too much? I paid $550 getting it from San Diego to Caribou, Maine, but the shipper used one of those Mail-Box places, so I just ate it and shut up. Anyone know anything on this kind of stuff? I figure worst case scenario is I ship it to the factory for $25 to $30 and he uses it for luggage on the trip back to England – tossing the charming paper bag he carried on-board full of undies and other crushables. This will add 17 pounds to his international baggage limit, but without a better idea, it seems the only reasonable way to get the case home. Note bass shipped in its flight case, but the original case was of course tossed into the deal. Ideas and suggestions - those who have actually messed with shipping overseas lately? |

Interesting. Priority Mail® International Max. length 60", max. length plus girth combined 108" 6 - 10 business days $87.30 $82.94 (On-line). Who would have thought the post office would be cheaper these days. That seems a fairly reasonable price. Thanks! |
